The Lead Interventional Radiology Technologist provides advanced technical expertise and guides the team in performing a broad range of IR procedures in compliance with all regulatory standards. This role coordinates daily workflow to ensure accuracy, efficiency, and a positive patient experience. The position requires proficiency with IR equipment and procedural technology across the pediatric acute-care settings and serves as a key clinical resource for the team.
Position Duties

Lead Oversight
Oversees the day-to-day operations of the Interventional Radiology (IR) department, partnering closely with the Lead IR Nurse to ensure safe, efficient, and high-quality patient care. Reviews outpatient and inpatient schedules to allocate staffing effectively and support coordinated, collaborative workflows. Proactively identifies barriers to service delivery and escalates operational or safety concerns to the appropriate supervisors as needed.
Operational Leadership
• Provides on-the-floor leadership to support smooth daily workflow and timely patient care.
• Serves as a clinical and operational resource for team members.
• Coordinates room assignments, case readiness, and workflow adjustments in real time.
Employee Management, Coaching, & Development
• Provides day-to-day guidance, mentoring, and skills reinforcement to staff.
• Supports onboarding, ongoing competency validation, and training on new or updated procedures and equipment.
• Offers timely feedback; redirects performance concerns using professional, constructive coaching.
• Promotes a positive, accountable culture aligned with organizational standards.
Fiscal Oversight
• Supports responsible resource utilization and contributes to budget stewardship.
• Monitors use of supplies and equipment to ensure cost effective practices.
• Identifies opportunities for process efficiency and cost reduction in collaboration with leadership.
Supply & Equipment Management
• Manages supply inventory to ensure availability while minimizing waste and expirations.
• Coordinates readiness, preventative maintenance, and repairs with Biomed, vendors, and Supply Chain.
• Assists with vendor engagement for product evaluation, troubleshooting, and in-service education.
Data & Workflow Management
• Monitors performance metrics such as case volume, room utilization, delays including First Case On Time Starts (FCOTS), and throughput.
• Ensures accurate documentation in RIS/PACS, scheduling systems, and quality databases.
• Uses data trends to recommend workflow improvements and support operational decision-making. -
Interventional Radiographic Procedures
• Explains procedures for patients and families.
• Prepares and positions patients for procedures.
• Ensures a sterile environment during procedures, setup and handling of sterile equipment trays, medical devices, and dressing applications.
• Works closely with radiologists and other medical professionals to perform minimally invasive, image-guided procedures.
• Operates radiographic equipment to produce high-quality diagnostic Vascular and Neuro Interventional Radiology studies and other specialized imaging exams to support Phoenix Children’s service line needs. -
Patient Observation and Monitoring
• Performs comprehensive hemodynamic monitoring, including set-up and maintenance of transducers, physiological data recorders, ECG monitors, oximetry device, digital cardiac output devices, and peripheral vascular recording equipment.
• Identifies variations and irregularities in monitoring data and promptly implements appropriate corrective measures based on the information provided.
Performs follow-up observation and monitoring until patients leave the department. -
Administration & Quality Control
• Demonstrates full competency in the use of electronic charting systems and imaging platforms, including RIS and PACS.
• Manages and maintains ancillary equipment required for diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, ensures appropriate functionality and availability.
• Performs image manipulation in accordance with departmental protocols.
• Conducts routine quality control checks on equipment and ensure compliance with established procedures and safety standards.
• Applies principles of continuous quality improvement and participates in departmental and organizational quality initiatives. -
Education, Training & Vendor Partnership
• Engages in ongoing professional development to maintain subject-matter expertise and strengthen team capability.
• Provides structured training, coaching, and real-time mentorship to staff on IR equipment, procedures, patient-care workflows, and safety standards.
• Leads competency reinforcement and collaborates with educators or clinical experts to ensure staff remain proficient in evolving IR practices.
• Builds and maintains productive relationships with vendors to support equipment education, troubleshooting issues, coordinate in-services, and ensure optimal utilization of technology.
• Participates in or supports research and innovation initiatives under the direction of Radiologists or Section Chiefs. -
Attends and facilitates meetings and special assignments related to the position and service line, including departmental team and staff meetings, quality and safety committees, regulatory reviews, and interdisciplinary or cross-collaborative workgroups.

Back-Up & Call Coverage
• Provides operational cross-coverage for Lead IR Nurse as needed.
• Performs on-call duties and works variable shifts as assigned to meet department needs. -
Performs miscellaneous job related duties as requested.
