Position Summary

Posting Note: Phoenix Children’s CardioDiagnostics is seeking candidates for an experienced Fetal Cardiac Sonographer. We are excited to be expanding and are looking for someone with excellent imaging skills and confident clinical understanding to join our team.

The successful candidate will join a group of highly skilled sonographers that model teamwork, collaboration and dedication to their patients and teammates. They will be a part of an innovative clinical and educational program, representing our team in the community, nationally, and internationally at our Fetal Cardiology Symposium. Our growing fetal program performed over 1300 fetal echocardiograms last year and anticipates substantial growth in the near future. Our fetal cardiac sonographers work closely with the fetal cardiologists and nurse coordinators to ensure timely, high-quality exams and best outcomes. The fetal sonographer will also perform pediatric and adult congenital cardiac echocardiograms. The candidate will have opportunities to participate in quality improvement initiatives, clinical research, education of medical students, residents, and fellows, and clinical time devoted to outpatient and inpatient care inclusive of fetal, pediatric, and adult congenital heart disease echocardiography.

Qualified applicants must have ARDMS RDCS FE and RDCS PE (or CCI’s RCCS) registry designations. Qualified candidates will have at least 6 years of full time pediatric cardiac sonography and at least 3 years of fetal echocardiography experience, as well as a proven track record of leadership. This person will be passionate about leading by example and will commit to being a leader on our team.

This position performs diagnostic cardiac sonography examinations with a sub-specialty in fetal cardiac sonography examinations, as well as cardiology procedures to provide data for diagnosis of disease and injuries in accordance with all applicable standards, regulation and licensing requirements. Maintains a close working relationship with fetal cardiologists and nurse coordinators.

Position Duties

  1. Basic and Advanced Diagnostic Cardiac Sonography including Fetal Sonography
    • Performs high quality fetal exams for interpretation by fetal cardiologist. Performs diagnostic cardiac sonography examinations on patients across the spectrum of congenital and acquired heart disease for interpretation by a cardiologist.
    • Determines proper technique and positioning to ensure optimal results in accordance with all applicable standards, protocols and procedures. Performs or assists with transesophageal, transthoracic and advanced techniques including stress echo cardiac sonography and/or 3D imaging as required and per training and expertise. Must regularly demonstrate mastery of fetal echocardiography.
    • Maintains a safe environment for patients, families, and coworkers while performing all activities of the job.
  2. Documents preliminary report
    • The fetal sonographer works closely with the fetal cardiologist for all fetal exams to arrive at diagnostic conclusions. The fetal cardiologist will write the report.
    • For all other pediatric or congenital exams, the sonographer creates a detailed report of sonographer` impressions to include pertinent medical history, anatomic findings and measurements for presentation to interpreting physician. It may include exam aspects outside sonogram results that may relate to diagnosis or treatment, including, but not limited to, patient reaction to temperature, pressure or movement of transducer, ability to respond to instructions, and movement limitations. Report is clear, concise, and grammatically correct and utilizes appropriate spelling and punctuation.
    • Performs finalizing functions using Syngo and/or Electronic Health Record to facilitate timely and accurate results, charge capture and archival of studies. Takes steps to quickly remedy identified errors and omissions utilizing the chain of command as necessary.
  3. Participates in the Annual Phoenix Fetal Cardiology Symposium
    • Willingness to assist with preparing images and/or presentations for the annual Fetal Cardiology Symposium. Able to participate as a Fetal Sonographer Faculty member and perform the duties assigned for a successful symposium. The duties may include teaching others in the hands-on session.
  4. Maintains professional and technical competency
    • Attends the monthly fetal conference meetings, Contributes and participates in other fetal education opportunities to develop and build the program, (ie: fetal conference, research, symposium, etc.)
    • Continues to pursue knowledge and self-improvement by remaining apprised of current literature, practices, and new developments in the field. Attends staff meetings as required to stay up to date on departmental policies and procedures. Participates in and contributes to Phoenix Children`s educational offerings and offsite conferences/seminars; completes self-directed learning via professional journals, texts and appropriate online resources to maintain continuing education credits as required for institutional and personal credentialing.
    • Participates in career development and leadership activities to support the function of the lab. Proactively evaluates practices and assists to create and implement changes to increase and enhance the effectiveness of workflow practices. Serves as a preceptor to students, fellows and orientees in our program.
    • Quality Improvement:
    • Participates in quality improvement initiatives and integrates feedback into daily practice.
  5. Care of Professional Environment and Equipment Maintenance
    • Participates in cleaning, re-stocking, re-supplying, and turnover of cardio diagnostic exam rooms and equipment to provide for efficient, effective and safe department operations.
    • Identifies and troubleshoots malfunctions to ensure continuous proper and safe operations. reports service needs and preventative maintenance issues as appropriate.
    • Enters information into the departmental logs as required for accreditation purposes.
  6. Performs miscellaneous job related duties as requested.
