Position Summary

The Senior Vice President, Hospital-Based In Chief provides executive physician leadership and strategic direction for Phoenix Children's hospital-based clinical services. This position is responsible for advancing operational excellence, clinical quality, patient safety, physician engagement, patient and family experience, and the continued growth of inpatient and acute care services across the health system. Reporting directly to the President & Chief Executive Officer, the Senior Vice President, Hospital-Based In Chief partners closely with executive physician and operational leaders to ensure exceptional clinical performance, coordinated care delivery, physician leadership development, and alignment with the organization's strategic priorities. Reporting to this position are the Division Chiefs and Medical Directors of Critical Care, Neonatology, Emergency Medicine, Fetal Care, Emergency Departments, Pathology, Urgent Care, Radiology, and Hospital Medicine. The Senior Vice President, Hospital-Based In Chief serves as a member of the Executive Physician Leadership Team and collaborates closely with the Chief Medical Officer, Physician in Chief, Surgeon in Chief, Senior Vice President of Research, nursing leadership, and operational executives to ensure an integrated, high-performing hospital-based care model.

Position Duties

  • Provides executive leadership and direction to Division Chiefs and Medical Directors responsible for hospital-based clinical programs, ensuring continued growth, operational excellence, physician engagement, and high-quality inpatient and acute care services.
  • Leads initiatives that improve quality outcomes, patient safety, operational performance, throughput, care coordination, and patient and family experience across hospital-based clinical services.
  • Develops, mentors, and evaluates Division Chiefs and Medical Directors while strengthening physician leadership capabilities, accountability, succession planning, and organizational effectiveness.
  • Leads physician leadership succession planning while partnering with Division Chiefs to recruit, retain, and develop exceptional physician talent. Supports expansion of hospital-based clinical programs aligned with Phoenix Children's strategic growth.
  • Works collaboratively with the Chief Medical Officer, Physician in Chief, Surgeon in Chief, Senior Vice President of Research, nursing executives, and operational leaders to advance excellence in clinical care, patient safety, research, education, and system integration.
  • Partners with operational leadership to ensure effective utilization of clinical systems, electronic health records, care pathways, capacity management, scheduling, documentation, and other technologies supporting hospital-based care delivery.
  • Partners with Human Resources and executive leadership to promote physician professionalism, accountability, engagement, wellness, and adherence to Phoenix Children's standards of clinical excellence and professional conduct.
  • Serves as a key executive leader supporting strategic initiatives, hospital operations, growth planning, and enterprise-wide physician leadership while performing additional responsibilities as assigned.
  • Performs miscellaneous job related duties as requested.
