Phoenix Children’s, a nationally recognized pediatric academic medical center, is seeking an experienced and motivated Advanced Practice Provider (Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant) to join our growing Pediatric Neurology Critical Care team.
This position offers a unique opportunity to practice within one of the nation’s premier pediatric neuroscience programs, featuring a large and collaborative Department of Neurology, an established Pediatric Neurocritical Care service, and a multidisciplinary team dedicated to delivering cutting-edge care to critically ill neonates, children, and adolescents with neurological disease and injury.

About the Program
Our pediatric neuroscience center provides comprehensive care for patients with complex neurological and neurosurgical conditions. The Neurocritical Care providers works closely with Pediatric, Cardiovascular and Neonatal Intensive Care , Neurosurgery, Neuro-Oncology, Rehabilitation Medicine, and Emergency Medicine to manage patients with:
• Acute brain injury and traumatic brain injury
• Status epilepticus and refractory epilepsy
• Stroke and cerebrovascular disorders
• CNS infections and inflammatory disease
• Neuromuscular disorders
• Hypoxic ischemic injury and altered mental status
• Intracranial pressure monitoring and advanced neuromonitoring

The APP will work alongside nationally recognized pediatric neurologists, intensivists, neurosurgeons, fellows, residents, bedside nursing teams, pharmacists, rehabilitation specialists, and other APPs in a highly collaborative academic environment focused on excellence in patient care, education, innovation, and research.

Responsibilities
• Provide comprehensive inpatient management for critically ill pediatric neurology patients
• Perform history and physical examinations, develop care plans, and coordinate multidisciplinary care
• Help manage neurologic emergencies and neurocritical care patients in collaboration with attending physicians.
• Collaborate with consulting services and intensive care teams
• Participate in family-centered communication and education
• Contribute to quality improvement, patient safety, and evidence-based practice initiatives

Qualifications
• Graduate of an accredited Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant program
• Pediatric Acute Care Nurse Practitioner certification
• Licensed or eligible for licensure in Arizona
• Minimum of 3 years pediatric experience
• Neurology experience preferred
• Strong communication skills and commitment to collaborative practice
• Experienced candidates preferred; exceptional new graduates with significant pediatric critical care RN experience may be considered

This position works in collaboration with the attending physicians and works within their scope of practice to provide excellent clinical care for patients. Plays a critical role in the patient family medical team. Professional who may practice in hospital’s inpatient and/or outpatient setting.

Position Duties

  • Conducts comprehensive health history, physical assessments and plans for infants, children and young adults with acute and chronic health conditions. Utilizes advanced assessment skills to manage a cohort of patients.
  • Orders and prescribes pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic interventions, and performs other therapeutic or corrective measures to treat illness and improve health status.
  • Formulates family centered plan of care. Performs daily documents as necessary. Collaborated and coordinated care with other team members.
  • Collects data and analyzes when necessary.
  • Performs any needed advanced procedures that are associated with their credentialing process DOP.
  • Utilizes the most up to date and evidence based practice for plan of care and able to alter the plan according to family needs and effectiveness or plan.
  • Serves as an educational resource to patient/family/ nursing staff/ provider team and other health care teams as needed.
  • Participates in own professional development by maintaining required competences, certifying body renewals, seeking educational offerings when available, and participates in the professional development of others which may include Advanced Practice Provider students, Residents and Medical Students. Acts as a preceptor/mentor for those new in department.
  • Demonstrates commitment to patient safety by bring up concerns in appropriate manner, reporting through appropriate channels, and ensuring change of practice when necessary. Demonstrates shared accountability of safe practice.
  • Performs miscellaneous job related duties as requested.
