Position Summary

Posting Note: Phoenix Children’s is implementing a Pharmacy-driven Medication Reconciliation Program integrating pharmacy technicians in the collection and documentation of medication histories for all admitted patients. We are actively seeking a motivated Pharmacy technician with related hospital experience with strong desire to transition into a leadership role. The individual in this position will be responsible for the direct supervision of pharmacy technicians involved in the medication reconciliation program at Arizona’s only free-standing Children’s Hospital.

The Inpatient Pharmacy Technician Supervisor is responsible for leading and overseeing Phoenix Children’s pharmacy technicians and key related programs and processes. This position supports the coordination of pharmacy technician programs and operations and the training and development of pharmacy technician practices to ensure accurate and efficient preparation and delivery of medications in accordance with applicable laws, regulations, and policies. Under the direct supervision of licensed pharmacists, this role is able to perform all job duties of a pharmacy technician in addition to supporting training, scheduling, hiring, and the development of policies related to pharmacy technicians.

Position Duties

  • Routinely staffs pharmacy technician shifts as required.
    Performs job duties of a Pharmacy Technician in all positions with proficiency and in accordance with applicable laws, regulations, policies, and best practices as required.
  • Provides Direct Supervision of technician staff including hiring, training, competency assessment, performance evaluations, scheduling, and coordination of daily activities
    • Actively participates in onboarding and training of new pharmacy technicians according to hospital and department standards.
    • Assists with pharmacy technician hiring including screening, scheduling interviews, pre-hire correspondence and onboarding.
    • Trains and ensures continued competency of pharmacy technicians involved in medication use processes and programs.
    • Assists with development and maintenance of pharmacy technician training documents, learning modules, and competencies to ensure consistent training among staff.
    • Conducts pharmacy technician staff performance evaluations. Prepares and delivers Performance Improvement Plans (PIP) as needed.
    • Develops and manages pharmacy technician schedules (including time off requests) that meet the needs of the department in accordance with hospital and pharmacy scheduling policies.
    • Actively assess staffing variances due to callouts, open shifts, restrictions and develop and implement coverage plans as necessary to ensure adequate coverage of critical roles and completion of daily tasks.
  • Supports the development, implementation, and maintenance of pharmacy related policies and procedures.
    • Develops standard operating procedures and workflows necessary to ensure safe and timely completion of assigned tasks.
    • Supports the development and implementation of policies and procedures related to medication use programs and processes.
    • Actively assists department leadership with development and implementation of Inpatient Pharmacy policies, standard operating procedures, and best practices for inpatient pharmacy operations.
    • Leads pharmacy technicians by strictly adhering to all department and hospital policies and procedures and promoting best practices.
  • Assists department leadership with developing, assessing, and implementing processes and best practices.
    • Collaborates with Pharmacy Leadership to identify and develop projects that support pharmacy needs. Promotes and leads change to improve processes.
    • Collects and analyzes data to identify opportunities for process improvements and enhancement of patient safety.
    • Actively participates in committees and process improvement projects while completing assigned tasks in a timely manner.
    • Tracks and evaluates processes and programs for efficiency and expected quality outcome.
    • Provides and coordinates periodic staff education and inservices.
  • Builds and strengthens relationships within the pharmacy department and hospital to provide quality patient care.
    • Promptly and politely answer phone calls.
    • Responds promptly and professionally to colleague concerns, questions, and requests.
    • Effectively communicate problems, patient needs, and pertinent information.
    • Works collaboratively with pharmacy and hospital colleagues.
  • Maintains and demonstrates advanced proficiency with pharmacy systems.
    • Maintains and demonstrates advanced proficiency in operating and troubleshooting pharmacy systems.
    • Actively observes use of pharmacy systems by technicians and escalates technical issues appropriately.
  • Performs miscellaneous job related duties as requested.
