Position Summary

Novice Infection Preventionist (IP) coordinates learning and on-going competency with the comprehensive organization-wide infection surveillance, prevention and control program in accordance with current requirements of regulatory, government and accrediting/licensing agencies and organizational policies and procedures. Duties include learning surveillance for healthcare-associated infections (HAIs); collection, analysis, interpretation and reporting of surveillance data; outbreak investigation; and program evaluation.

Position Duties

  • Program Evaluation and Development
    • Becomes familiar with plan for infection surveillance, prevention and control activities based on the facility risk assessment.
    • On-going learning epidemiologic principles to conduct surveillance and ability to independently initiate a risk assessment with pertinent issues identified for further improvement.
    • Evaluates and modifies the surveillance plan, as necessary.
    • Assists with implementation of infection prevention and control policies and protocols.
    • Learns to communicate infection prevention and control information and data to various committees and healthcare workers across the organization as assigned.
    • Stays current on infection prevention and control regulatory and accreditation standards and maintain compliance.
  • Performance Improvement
    • Learns to define the scope of the project and select appropriate PI tools to aid in efficiency, reliability, effectiveness and ensure sustainability of the initiative.
    • Ensures that customer needs and expectations are considered in the development of and continuous improvement of processes, products, and services.
    • Monitors and analyzes process and outcome measures to evaluate the effectiveness and sustainability.
    • Participates in PI committees, teams and initiatives as indicated.
    • Identifies barriers for implementation and develops strategies to minimize or remove barriers.
    • Implements strategies to sustain efforts such as audit tools and meaningful feedback.
    • Rounds, daily or monthly, depending on needs per Unit/Department.
  • Professional Development

    • Pursues professional growth and development of required knowledge and skills.
    • Creates study plan for Certification in Infection Control.
    • Establishes at least 1 professional goal per year.
    • Advocates for patient safety, health worker safety, and safe practices.
    • Signs up and participates in an infection prevention and control professional organization/association (i.e.: APIC).

    • Consults and collaborates as needed, with local, state, and federal public health officials, and community health organizations.
    • Involves multidisciplinary teams to ensure changes are vetted by all stakeholder groups.

    • Assesses and addresses learning needs individually and of those served.

    • Evaluates the effectiveness of educational programs and learner outcomes.
  • Regulatory Requirements
    • Complies with regulatory and mandatory reporting requirements at the local, state and federal levels.
    • Facilitates compliance with regulatory and accreditation standards.
    • Stays current on infection prevention and control regulatory and accreditation standards.
  • Performs miscellaneous job related duties as requested.

2. Recent acute care or pediatric experience within 3-5 years.
