Position Summary

The Patient Education Content Specialist develops and maintains an infrastructure that supports high-quality, evidence-based patient and family education. This position oversees the creation, editing, and dissemination of both custom and broad-use health education resources. The Patient Education Specialist develops provider-authored, branded content using custom GPT tools; ensures all patient/family education materials meet standards of health literacy, readability, and brand style; and supports the infrastructure, workflows, and systems that make reliable health information accessible to families and staff throughout the organization.

Position Duties

  • Develops and maintains custom branded patient/family education content using AI tools.
    • Uses GPT tools for provider-authored, branded patient education materials.
    • Reviews and edits generated content for health literacy, consistency, and accessibility.
    • Ensures all materials meet Phoenix Children’s branding, readability, and cultural competency standards.
    • Maintains consistency of tone, terminology, and formatting across all custom content.
  • Curates and distributes broad-use patient/family educational resources.
    • Responds to requests for not-yet-available health information by identifying and curating appropriate resources for broad or individualized distribution.
    • Supports maintenance of broad-use resource infrastructure, ensuring easy access and consistent quality.
    • Collaborates with the Clinical Health Educator when clinical insight is required.
    • Promotes equitable access to culturally and linguistically appropriate materials.
  • Supports the governance committee by facilitating the review, approval, and development of custom patient and family educational content.
    • Collaborates with the governance committee to implement processes for developing custom patient and family education materials in alignment with approved priorities and standards.
    • Maintains and applies the organization’s Style Guide and health literacy principles across all patient and family education materials, utilizing tools such as PEMAT to assess understandability and actionability.
    • Acts as a liaison among clinical teams, governance committees, and organizational leadership to ensure patient and family education materials align with strategic and clinical objectives.
    • Provides consultation, training, and resources to staff on health literacy best practices.
  • Ensure maintenance of patient/family education infrastructure.
    • Guides maintenance of infrastructure supporting both custom and broad-use patient education content (documents, ticket system, portal, etc.).
    • Ensures systems are current, reliable, and accessible to staff across the organization.
    • Collaborates with IT and other departments to troubleshoot, improve, and enhance access to patient/family education systems.
  • Quality, training, and continuous improvement
    • Provides ongoing staff training in patient education content development, evaluation of health literacy, and ethical provision of medical information.
    • Applies established quality criteria in selecting and maintaining materials for both print and electronic collections.
    • Participates in implementation of process improvements to enhance content accessibility and quality.
  • Professional competence and organizational contribution
    • Maintains professional and technical competency by staying current in healthcare education, emerging technologies, and consumer health information resources.
    • Participates in committees and contributes to strategic projects supporting patient and family centered education.
  • Performs miscellaneous job related duties as requested.
