Position Summary
The Media Relations Specialist is a key member of the Communications team responsible for executing on external communication strategies at Phoenix Children’s, with particular emphasis on media relations. This team member is tasked with identifying proactive opportunities and vetting incoming requests, identifying appropriate spokespersons and preparing them as needed, gathering background details from clinical and administrative leaders, drafting briefing materials, facilitating media interviews, media monitoring and assessing quality of coverage. The Media Relations Specialist uses their writing and editing skills to draft materials such as press releases, fact sheets, media briefing documents and key messages. This position supports the organization’s efforts related to planning, execution and measurement of communications efforts to drive awareness, understanding, preference and loyalty to Phoenix Children’s with our external stakeholders, especially media and patient families.
Position Duties

Media Relations and Content Planning
Works with internal and external stakeholders to uncover opportunities for stories and important content for media relations. Monitors and researches industry information and related news, identifying media opportunities to help support and elevate key messages and strategy for the organization. Closely monitors existing mechanisms for fielding incoming media inquiries. Prepares spokespersons with briefing documents and media training as needed ahead of interview opportunities. Coordinates on-site media interviews, including escorting reporters/photographers/videographers while on-site at any Phoenix Children’s facility. Develops and executes media relations plans in line with agreed upon goals. Builds and maintains relationships with key media, spokespersons and internal stakeholders. Ensures activities conform to legal standards, including but not limited to HIPAA and Stark. Coordinates with outside agencies as needed. -
Writing and Editing
Researches, writes and edits material targeted to various stakeholders (media, spokespersons, patient families, etc.) in support of organization initiatives and priorities. This may include press releases, emails, speaking points, FAQs, award entries, patient stories and other communications vehicles. Writes in a professional manner (style, grammar, interest, readability and tone), presents facts and quotations accurately, and ensures the finished product communicates effectively with appropriate language geared to the audience. When editing for others within the health system, handles with respect for the writer and an understanding of the project goals and intended use(s). Writes using AP and Phoenix Children`s style guides with a commitment to error-free content. -
Monitoring, Measurement and Reporting
Monitors media platforms, local, national and trade news daily. Keeps apprised on social media trends and issues as they may impact media relations efforts. Monthly, quarterly, annual executive-facing reporting on media placements against stated objectives and demonstrates the effectiveness of media relations efforts. Analyzes quality of earned media against key messages and looks for ways to continually improve spokesperson performance and journalist engagement. -
