In alignment with the American Kidney Foundation (AKF) standards and guidelines for this job description, the Ld Hemodialysis Technician maintains smooth and efficient flow of patients in the dialysis clinic, performs functions delegated by nursing and physician staff, and maintains and promotes a safe, clean organized environment for the safe delivery of care while maintaining professional conduct, good communication skills, and confidentiality. This position participates in the multidisciplinary process as well as unit organization and supply management according to CMS and unit policy. In addition, the Ld Hemodialysis Technician acts as the primary preceptor for CCHTs and Registered Nurses within the CCHT scope of practice.

1. Assembles necessary supplies and provides oversight of monthly specimen collection to ensure all required laboratory studies are obtained.
2. Assembles, prepares and tests the dialysis extra corporeal circuit and machine according to protocol and patient specific dialysis prescription.
3. Discontinues dialysis treatments and establishes hemostasis following unit protocol. Inspects, cleans, and dresses access according to unit protocol.
4. Inspects a patient’s dialysis access. Administers local anesthesia, inserts needles, and initiates dialysis according to unit protocol and patient prescription.
5. Documents pre, intra and post treatment parameters and vital signs, and communicates patient condition including medical, psychosocial and nutritional concerns to the Registered Nurse.
6. Acts as a primary preceptor for CCHTs and registered nurses within the CCHT scope of practice.
7. Ensures appropriate machine and quality logs are well organized and complete on an ongoing basis.
8. Measures and adjusts blood flow rates, calculates fluid removal and administers replacement saline and anticoagulant according to unit protocols and prescription.
9. Monitors patients and equipment, responds to alarms, dialysis emergencies and readjusts treatment parameters as defined by established protocols and individual patient requirements.
10. Performs miscellaneous job related duties as requested.
