Position Summary
This position manages, evaluates and supervises operational functions and activities of Language and Cultural Services by guiding and supporting staff and serving as liaison with other departments to facilitate quick resolution of issues to ensure excellence in medical interpretation and translation services. This position provides cultural competence education and consultation both internally to staff and departments and externally to the healthcare community and coordinates, monitors and evaluates targeted community education efforts.
Position Duties

Manages and monitors daily operations of Language Services and all personnel related issues.
- Provides leadership, prompt problem resolution, and communicates plan of action to staff in a timely manner.
- Develops and supervises staff through provision of timely feedback and use of appropriate Human Resource policies and tools to facilitate and ensure the ability of staff to achieve the highest level of professional growth and desired performance standards.
- Identifies educational needs of staff to ensure maintenance of staff competency and quality growth.
- Establishes and monitors contracts to provide support for Language Services (e.g. telephonic interpreter services, sign language services and translation services).

Evaluates and manages Operating Budget.
- Monitors expenses including variance reports on a monthly basis.
- Works with Director to establish annual budgets based on yearly expenses.
- Identifies areas of cost containment.
- Provides timely review and feedback to supervisor for fiscal responsibilities of designated areas, reflecting optimal utilization of all resources.

Quality Management and Compliance.
- Participates in hospital activities and leads department operational and quality improvement initiatives.
- Proactively evaluates systems and practices and implements changes to enhance the quality and cost effectiveness
- Works with legal and risk departments to assure that PCH is compliant in Language Services area for consents, forms, signage, policies, etc.
- Works with staff for understanding of Accreditation Agency, FDA, Federal Guideline requirements of provision of language services.

Professional Development.
- Maintains professional competency in all aspects of language services and community education projects (e.g., parenting classes, interpreting classes, webinars on industry standards) through pursuing knowledge and self-improvement and remaining apprised of current trends, developments, and awareness of latest practices to improve outcomes.

As needed, interprets for families and health care providers in Spanish to ensure delivery of quality language services. Participates as appropriate in emergent situations.
- As on-call supervisor, supports staff by taking an interpreter shift when needed.

Community Outreach.
- Coordinates completion of professional outreach/consultation activities by negotiating productivity and financial parameters and establishing timelines for completion
- Works closely and in conjunction with a variety of community leaders, health care providers, and health care leaders to develop and maintain strong understanding and support of hospital and health care initiatives.
- Plans, develops, implements, and evaluates community education projects to ensure targeted population and/or specific health care needs are effectively met. Develops reports that reflect accomplishments to community partners.

In support of hospital goals, coordinates the cultural competency training for both the Hospital and the health care community.
- Works closely and in conjunction with other disciplines and specialty areas to ensure effective and coordinated delivery of high quality language and culturally competent services. This includes, but not limited to providing Diversity and Cultural Competency training for New Employee Orientation, New Nurse Orientation, and new interns in all specialties.
- Provides assessment of English and Spanish language fluency for clinical staff being hired at the Hospital.

Supports new and existing departments in meeting language needs.
- Proactively meets with leadership to establish staff interpreter and technology needs.
- Works with IT to make sure technology is supported in new build areas.
- Proactively makes sure that current departments have updates in technology and that their needs are being met.
- Performs miscellaneous job related duties as requested.
