Position Summary

The Lead Pharmacy Technician is responsible for leading and supporting daily operations of pharmacy technicians within the Inpatient Pharmacy. This position supports the training and development of the pharmacy technician practice to ensure accurate and efficient preparation and delivery of medications in accordance with applicable laws, regulations, and policies. Under the direct supervision of licensed pharmacists, this role is able to perform all job duties of a pharmacy technician in addition to supporting training, scheduling, hiring, and the development of policies related to pharmacy technicians.

Position Duties

  1. Staffing
    • Routinely staff in pharmacy technician shifts and perform job duties of a Pharmacy Technician in all positions with proficiency and in accordance with applicable laws, regulations, policies, and best practices.
  2. Training
    • Actively participate in onboarding and training of new pharmacy technicians according to hospital and department standards. Provide supplemental training and guidance for pharmacy technicians when needed to ensure staff competency. Assist with development and maintenance of pharmacy technician training documents, learning modules, and competencies to ensure consistent training among staff. Support the Pharmacy Technician Advancement Plan by participating in initial and annual technician competency assessments.
  3. Scheduling
    • Assist Pharmacy Operations Supervisor(s) in the development and maintenance of pharmacy technician schedules that are fair, accurate, and meet the needs of the department in accordance with hospital and pharmacy scheduling policies.
    • Actively assess staffing variances due to callouts, open shifts, restrictions, etc. and assist Operations Supervisors in developing and implementing coverage plans as necessary to ensure adequate coverage of critical roles and completion of daily tasks.
  4. Workflow
    • Collaborate with Pharmacy Operations Leaders in leading daily technician workflow to ensure safe and timely completion of assigned tasks. Support pharmacy staff by answering workflow questions and addressing concerns, while maintaining direct communication with Pharmacy Leadership. Report technician deviations from procedure to Operations Supervisors in a timely manner to ensure patient safety and staff compliance with policies and procedures.
  5. Policies and Procedures
    • Actively assist department leadership with development and implementation of Inpatient Pharmacy policies, standard operating procedures, and best practices for inpatient pharmacy operations. Lead fellow technicians by strictly adhering to all department and hospital policies and procedures and promoting best practices.
  6. Projects and Process Improvement
    • Collaborate with Pharmacy Leadership to identify and develop projects that support pharmacy needs. Contribute to development and evaluation of the Pharmacy Technician Advancement Plan to promote growth and retention of pharmacy technicians. Actively participate on committees and process improvement projects while completing assigned tasks in a timely manner.
  7. Hiring
    • Assist in the hiring of pharmacy staff through active engagement in the interview process for pharmacy technicians, interns, pharmacists, and other pharmacy staff as requested. Provide fair and objective evaluations of candidates to support hiring decisions.
  8. Advanced Proficiency with Pharmacy Systems
    • Maintain and demonstrate advanced proficiency in operating and troubleshooting pharmacy systems. Actively observes use of pharmacy systems by technicians and escalates technical issues appropriately.
  9. Assisting Ancillary Teams
    • Assist ancillary pharmacy teams (supply chain, compliance, research, systems and solutions, etc.) with operational needs as requested by Pharmacy Leaders.
  10. Performs miscellaneous job related duties as requested.
