Position Summary
The Director of the Hospital Sterile Processing Department (SPD) is responsible for overseeing the entire sterile processing operation within the hospital system. This includes the decontamination, inspection, assembly, packaging, sterilization, and distribution of surgical instruments and medical equipment. The Director ensures compliance with all regulatory requirements, maintains the highest standards of safety and efficiency, and leads a team of skilled professionals dedicated to providing exceptional patient care.
Position Duties

Leadership & Management
- Lead, mentor, and manage the Sterile Processing Department staff, including hiring, training, scheduling, and performance evaluations across the system.
- Develop and implement policies and procedures to ensure efficient and effective operations in compliance with all regulatory standards (e.g., AAMI, OSHA, CDC, Joint Commission, DNV and CMS).

Operations & Quality Control
- Oversees the decontamination, sterilization, and storage of surgical instruments and medical devices, ensuring all processes meet quality standards across the system.
- Implement and monitor quality assurance programs to maintain high standards of cleanliness, functionality, and readiness of instruments and equipment.

Compliance & Safety
- Ensure the department adheres to all infection control guidelines and protocols.
- Maintain documentation, staff competencies and records in compliance with regulatory requirements and hospital policies.
- Conduct regular audits and inspections to identify and address potential compliance issues. Reported through Quality Dashboards.

Budgeting & Resource Management
- Develop and manage the department’s budget, including cost control, resource allocation, and procurement of necessary supplies and equipment.
- Optimize inventory management to ensure availability of sterile supplies while minimizing waste and costs.

Collaboration & Communication
- Collaborate with other departments, such as Operating Room, Nursing, and Supply Chain, to coordinate the efficient and timely provision of sterile instruments and supplies.
- Communicate effectively with hospital leadership and staff to address and resolve issues, provide updates, and promote a culture of safety and continuous improvement.

Education & Training
- Provide ongoing education and training to SPD staff on best practices, new technologies, and regulatory changes.
- Promote professional development and continuing education opportunities for staff.
- Performs miscellaneous job related duties as requested.
