Position Summary

The Outpatient Pharmacy Operations Supervisor is responsible for supervising the daily operations of the Phoenix Children’s Outpatient Pharmacy. This individual oversees the outpatient pharmacy technicians, lead pharmacy technicians, and pharmacy interns while providing support for pharmacists working within the Retail Pharmacy. This role is responsible for the development and optimization of pharmacy operations, scheduling, and staffing initiatives to enhance patient care. The Outpatient Pharmacy Operations Supervisor reports directly to the Director of Outpatient Pharmacy Services.

Position Duties

  1. Direct management of technician staff including hiring, competency assessment, evaluations, and advancement.
    • a. Supports the advancement and optimization of the Outpatient Pharmacy Technician Advancement Plan to continue to advance the roles and responsibilities of outpatient pharmacy technicians.
    • b. Assists with technician hiring including screening, scheduling interviews, pre-hire correspondence and on-boarding.
    • c. Develops and implement programs that support employee engagement.
    • d. Conducts technician staff performance evaluations. Prepares and delivers Performance Improvement Plans (PIP).
  2. Supervises and coordinates daily technician activities in the outpatient pharmacy, manages pharmacy operations technology, and ensure appropriate staffing levels.
    • a. Assures that daily patient care tasks are completed prior to shift ending.
    • b. Assigns daily workflow stations on communications board
    • c. Completes and manages technician schedule including requests for time off to ensure the pharmacy is appropriately staffed to meet patient care needs.
  3. Leads daily outpatient pharmacy operations to maintain department quality control, regulatory compliance, safe medication management, and adherence with pharmacy department policies
    • a. Participates with survey readiness and serves on committees as required.
    • b. Maintains records and oversees staff activity related to regulatory compliance.
    • c. Assists with creation and maintenance of departmental pharmacy policies and procedures.
  4. Assists department leadership with developing, assessing, and implementing processes.
    • a. Effectively leads and manages projects to completion.
    • b. Develops standard operating procedures and workflows.
    • c. Promotes and leads change to improve processes.
    • d. Collects and analyze data to identify improvements and implement changes.
  5. Actively participate in departmental education activities. Responsible for education, training, and orientation of technicians and interns.
    • a. Ensures training requirements have been met and documented in a timely manner.
    • b. Creates and implement programs to educate and develop staff.
  6. Staffs in a pharmacist role approximately 50% of the time. Demonstrates and maintains competency with pharmacy information systems in addition to leadership functions.
    • a. Maintains competencies in pharmacist roles.
    • b. Completes all department and organizational mandatory competencies as required.
    • c. Functions in a daily staff role as required.
    • d. Assist Pharmacy Manager in providing oversight of daily operations.
  7. Builds and strengthens relationships within the pharmacy department and Phoenix Children’s to provide quality patient care.
    • a. Promptly and politely answers phone calls.
    • b. Responds promptly and professionally to colleague concerns, questions, and requests.
    • c. Effectively communicates problems, patient needs, and pertinent information.
    • d. Works collaboratively with pharmacy and hospital colleagues.
  8. Demonstrates and maintains a current knowledge of best practice pharmacy operations and industry benchmarks.
    • a. Provides and coordinates periodic staff education and in-services.
    • b. Actively involved with national and local pharmacy education.
  9. Performs miscellaneous job related duties as requested.
