Position Summary

This position provides general oversight for Respiratory Care services to ensure daily clinical operations achieve and comply with established hospital and departmental policies, procedures, and all applicable regulations and standards. Plans and coordinates staffing resources in accordance with productivity standards. This position also assumes a team leader role for all Respiratory Care clinical areas including the McDowell campus and maintains all skills and knowledge sufficient to provide safe, effective, and developmentally appropriate care to all ages of patients and in all clinical areas.

Position Duties

  1. Provides oversight for daily clinical operational activities that support patient care provision by determining level of staffing needed. Collects and analyzes information to project staffing plans for upcoming shift/shifts.
    • Accurately manages and adjusts staffing schedule. Updates the departmental leadership team on staffing issues and concerns.
  2. Analyzes critical situations and applies appropriate judgment and critical thinking for problem resolution.
    • Provides factual accounts of operational situations using effective communication methods to the department leadership and education team. Communicates experiences, safety concerns, and improvement opportunities. Completes occurrence reports as appropriate and assists with investigative follow up as needed.
  3. Assists with daily operational activities by helping monitor quality and work flow effectiveness. Trouble shoots issues and processes to ensure optimum efficiency.
    • Participates in and promotes cost containment strategies. Assists with safety audits and compliance with regulatory standards.
  4. Interacts with and explains care modalities to patients, families, and the health care team in an understandable manner based on individual diversity and learning styles.
    • Introduces oneself to the family, patient, and health care team. Displays a positive customer relations attitude.
  5. Safely performs various diagnostic and therapeutic procedures within specialty area according to established standards, procedural guidelines, and policies. Assesses clinical status and provides patient care plan suggestions towards desired outcomes.
    • Applies knowledge and understanding of the proper and safe use of all Respiratory Care interventions and related equipment. Successfully completes and assists with initial and on-going competency validations. Troubleshoots interventions and equipment as it applies to various patient care situations.
  6. Demonstrates the ability to manage people along by mitigating conflicts. Delegates duties throughout the shift in accordance to changing pt care demands while adhering to productivity standards.
  7. Manages multiple priorities and applies effective time management skills, using downtime for work related activities. Coaches and mentors others.
    • Ensures timely and accurate patient care and billing documentation.
  8. Continuously improves and takes the initiative to develop self and others. Stays current on operational issues, priorities, policies, procedures, best practices and advances related to respiratory care.
    • Attends educational offerings, departmental meetings, and stays appraised of departmental and hospital communication. Fosters communication to the respiratory care team.
  9. Works effectively in a team-based environment especially during stressful situations involving quickly changing priorities. Displays appropriate leadership skills in managing people, instilling trust and credibility.
    • Intervenes appropriately in urgent and emergent situations. Coaches and develops other staff members.
  10. Performs miscellaneous job related duties as requested.
