Position Summary

Posting Note: The Student Nurse Intern role is designed to provide nursing students with an interest in pediatrics an opportunity to advance their clinical and critical thinking skills within the ambulatory care settings as part of the multidisciplinary team. The ambulatory care setting is a network of numerous clinics and day treatment centers that provide specialty care to patients outside of the hospital. These clinics are open Monday-Friday during the day. Student Nurse Interns will work 32-40 hours per week in the Summer Intensive Program that lasts 10 weeks. Most worked time will be 10 hours shifts, following a dedicated schedule.

This position, in collaboration with the healthcare team, patient and family, coordinates and promotes patient health utilizing evidence-based practice through supervision of delivery of professional nursing care with a clinical nurse across the care continuum. This position advocates for the patient and family adhering to nursing and medical plans of care, regulatory standards, and organizational values. Applications of specific skills are limited to those in which the Intern has received didactic instruction and demonstrates clinical competency.

Position Duties

  1. Utilizes multiple platforms to complete a supervised nursing assessment of patients and their families consistent with age and condition, including physical, psychological, social, developmental, and educational factors. Synthesizes and analyzes data to anticipate nursing diagnoses, practice prioritizing needs, and developing a nursing plan of care.
  2. Implements plans of care under supervision in accordance with regulatory and organizational policies, procedures, and guidelines. Provides supervised health education related to health promotion and the management of acute and chronic health conditions including skills required to maintain and restore health. With supervision, learns care coordination care and care transitions within the organization and the community, working collaboratively with the healthcare team, patient, and family to promote positive outcomes and prevent complications. Advocates for patients and families, offering support and guidance related to navigating ambulatory services and processes, resource management, and community-based services. Partners with patients and families to establish realistic goals and expectations.
  3. With supervision, continually evaluates patient understanding and response to the plan of care. Shares observations and assessment outcomes with healthcare team, patient, and family to ensure timely communication and understanding of health status, progress, and ongoing needs. Modifies nursing diagnoses and plan of care based on re-evaluation. Documents in the medical record with supervision.
  4. Under supervision, facilitates the delivery of safe patient care, monitoring quality and regulatory indicators, and working with leaders to identify process improvement opportunities.
  5. Contributes to the team effort by accomplishing required activities within establish parameters to ensure compliance with all applicable medication, storage, and documentation standards, regulations, and requirement.
  6. Performs miscellaneous job related duties as requested.
