Position Summary

Posting Note: The Division of Infectious Diseases at Phoenix Children’s in Phoenix, AZ is seeking an experienced Advanced Practice Providers, Pediatric Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant, to provide clinical care at Phoenix Children’s main campus. The ideal candidate has at least two years of experience in inpatient pediatrics. Prior infectious diseases experience is desirable, although not required. The inpatient ID consultative service supports the entire range of pediatric patients at Phoenix Children’s, from general pediatrics to all surgical subspecialty services to the pediatric, cardiac, and neonatal ICUs. The service provides active and extensive support to the oncology services and the transplant programs (Bone Marrow, Kidney, Liver and Cardiac). This position and our entire service have primarily inpatient activities, but all division members take part in some of the outpatient clinic activity. The position will include some rotating weekend and holiday coverage. Inpatient duties include, but are not limited to: Seeing patients with the ID physicians on the clinical inpatient consultation service. Obtaining health history and performing physical examination. Documentation in the Electronic Medical Record System (EMR). Assisting with consults and follow-up visits on inpatients. Recommending and interpreting diagnostic tests and therapeutic modalities. Supporting and coordinating care with multi-disciplinary consulting teams, e.g., nursing, residents, fellows, attendings, pharmacy, specialty consultants. Providing patient and family education. Participation in focused quality or research projects, in conjunction with the ID attending team, is encouraged. Active involvement in resident, fellow, and medical student teaching through affiliated programs is expected. The successful candidate will become an integral member of the Division of Pediatric Infectious Diseases at Phoenix Children’s. This is a growing division responsible for providing infectious diseases care for the rapidly growing population of the greater Phoenix metropolitan area. The division works closely with the Infection Prevention and Control team, the Antimicrobial Stewardship team, the ID Pharmacist, and the Microbiology Laboratory. Phoenix Children’s Hospital main campus, located in the heart of Phoenix, is a full-service, freestanding, tertiary medical center, offering 433 licensed beds, 72 of which are dedicated to intensive care and 33 of which are NICU beds. The hospital serves a spectrum of patients ranging from local community general pediatric patients to the most complex patients from throughout Arizona and into surrounding states and northern Mexico. We are a rapidly growing healthcare system, soon expanding to 610 licensed beds, with an additional 60 NICU beds. Phoenix Children’s is a teaching hospital, leading the way for the next generation of pediatric providers through residency programs and fellowships, and is actively involved in clinical research, dedicating $10 million annually to support research activities.

This position works in collaboration with the attending physicians and works within their scope of practice to provide excellent clinical care for patients. Plays a critical role in the patient family medical team. Professional who may practice in hospital’s inpatient and/or outpatient setting.

Position Duties

  1. Conducts comprehensive health history, physical assessments and plans for infants, children and young adults with acute and chronic health conditions. Utilizes advanced assessment skills to manage a cohort of patients.
  2. Orders and prescribes pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic interventions, and performs other therapeutic or corrective measures to treat illness and improve health status.
  3. Formulates family centered plan of care. Performs daily documents as necessary. Collaborated and coordinated care with other team members.
  4. Collects data and analyzes when necessary.
  5. Performs any needed advanced procedures that are associated with their credentialing process DOP.
  6. Utilizes the most up to date and evidence based practice for plan of care and able to alter the plan according to family needs and effectiveness or plan.
  7. Serves as an educational resource to patient/family/ nursing staff/ provider team and other health care teams as needed.
  8. Participates in own professional development by maintaining required competences, certifying body renewals, seeking educational offerings when available, and participates in the professional development of others which may include Advanced Practice Provider students, Residents and Medical Students. Acts as a preceptor/mentor for those new in department.
  9. Demonstrates commitment to patient safety by bring up concerns in appropriate manner, reporting through appropriate channels, and ensuring change of practice when necessary. Demonstrates shared accountability of safe practice.
  10. Performs miscellaneous job related duties as requested.
