This position completes the tasks assigned and the duties that are pertinent to the coordination of athletic trainers for league games and events and the promotion of Phoenix Children’s Sports Medicine program. Activities may include but are not limited to hiring, scheduling ATs, performance feedback and training, advancement of the sports medicine and athletic training program, collaboration with coaches, leadership, marketing, and communication, and outside stakeholders, creating content that supports the strategic goals of the department, and providing care of athletes in a variety of settings.

Position Duties

  • Provides coordination of ATC staff assignments for league games, tournaments, and special events, and serves as the point of contact for league and tournament coordinators, contracted athletic training services, outside organizations, and sports medicine programs.
    • Responsibilities include but are not limited to daily staffing assignments, coordination of coverage for league games and tournaments, and collaboration with the Supervising ATC for hiring, performance reviews, training, and competencies as needed.
    • Monitors and completes staff competency and scope of practice, and reports observed concerns to ATC Supervisor and practice manager.
    • Monitors policies, procedures, compliance, and safety monitoring to ensure appropriate standards are met.
    • Performs quality audits as directed and facilitates completion of occurrence reports as needed.
    • Creates and design protocols for use in athletic training and treatment of pediatric and adolescent athletes.
    • Act as a support system and resource for athletic trainers.
  • Works collaboratively with the sports medicine providers and leadership to promote the sports medicine program to internal and external audiences.
    • Reports directly to the Sports Medicine Director and Orthopedics Manager.
    • Under the direction of leadership and in collaboration with marketing and communications, assists with the creation, coordination, and execution of content that promotes the Sports Medicine program at Phoenix Children’s.
    • Interfaces and nurtures positive relationships with managers, team members, internal collaborators, external stakeholders, and customers to generate awareness, foster collaboration, and support strategic initiatives for the Sports Medicine program.
    • Assists with the coordination and implementation of the annual Sports Medicine Conference.
  • Provides direct patient/athlete care.
    • Prepares athletes for practice and competition, including manual therapy techniques, muscle activation, taping, bandaging and application of modalities.
    • Attends games, competitions, and tournaments as a First Responder in the case of injuries and emergency situations. Coordinates with local EMS and facility in situations of emergent care.
    • Evaluates injuries to determine return to play, management, emergency care, and/or referral to physicians.
    • Communicates in a timely manner with coaches, staff, and caregivers regarding athletes` activity limitations and progressions towards return to play.
    • Makes recommendations for therapeutic exercises and home injury care as deemed necessary and appropriate.
    • Documents all treatments and communications regarding athletes into Electronic Medical Recording and/or associated recording system applications adopted by Phoenix Children’s for the purpose of documentation of services during athletic events.
    • Collaborates with Sports Medicine physicians regarding athlete care as needed.
    • When in clinic, assists providers with the application, adjustment and removal of splints, slings and other orthopedic DME related appliances within their scope of knowledge and practice.
  • . Identifies, collects, analyzes, and presents relevant information regarding problems and opportunities to foster continued growth and development of the Sports Medicine program.
  • Performs miscellaneous job related duties as requested.
