Position Details
Position Summary
This position completes the tasks assigned and the duties that are pertinent to Supervision of athletic training staff including but not limited to hiring, scheduling ATs, performance feedback and training, advancement of the sports medicine and athletic training program, collaboration with coaches and leadership, and providing care of athletes in a variety of settings. The head athletic trainer (AT) provides support and education to local high schools, universities, and athletic teams, attends games and competitions, and evaluates injuries to determine their management and possible referral to physicians. The AT prepares athletes for practice and competition using a variety of techniques and modalities and assists the orthopedic practitioners and other staff members with the care and treatment of athletes in clinic as needed.
Position Duties

Provides leadership to the athletic training staff and serves as point of contact for Athletic Directors, CALPAC, contracted athletic training services, outside organizations, and sports medicine programs.
• Responsibilities include but are not limited to daily staffing assignments, coordination of coverage for season practices, games, and tournaments, hiring, performance reviews, training, and competencies.
• Monitors and completes staff competency and scope of practice, and reports observed concerns to operational manager.
• Monitors and makes recommendations for modification of policies, procedures, compliance, and safety monitoring to ensure appropriate standards are met.
• Performs quality audits as directed and facilitates completion of occurrence reports as needed. -
Serves as a resource to ensure proper onboarding and training of new staff.
• Specific duties include but are not limited to: Checking off competencies of new hires, leadership training, maintaining service excellence, appropriate efficiency, and workflow in the training room and/or clinic, and use of available tools for reporting positive outcomes and addressing concerns with performance.
• Is responsible for maintain credentials, certifications, and licensures of direct reports. -
Provides direct patient/athlete care.
• Prepares athletes for practice and competition, including manual therapy techniques, muscle activation, taping, bandaging and application of modalities.
• Attends games, competitions, and tournaments as a First Responder in the case of injuries and emergency situations. Coordinates with local EMS and facility in situations of emergent care.
• Evaluates injuries to determine return to play, management, and referral to physicians.
• Instructs athletes on activity limitations and monitors their rehab progress including prescribing therapeutic exercises and home injury care.
• Documents all treatments, rehab, communications, and doctor`s notes of all athletes into Electronic Medical Recording and/or associated Collegiate level record systems such as Sportsware.
• Communicates daily with coaches and staff regarding athletes` activity limitations and progressions towards return to play.
• Assists with the scheduling of doctor referrals, physical therapy appointments, imaging, and surgeries as necessary. Collaborates with physicians regarding athlete`s care to determine return to play. -
Markets the PCH sports medicine program under the direction of the PCMG leadership.
