Position Summary

The Research Lab Tech II performs a combination of skilled and highly skilled procedures or analyses involving complex methods or a complex series of steps. Incumbents have responsibility for overseeing or conducting critical parts of research projects such as complex statistical analyses or laboratory procedures carried out with materials which may require constant monitoring. Incumbents may also perform the day-to-day supervision and coordination of a research group, taking charge of the execution of a research project. This classification is to distinguish from the Research Laboratory Technician in that incumbents contribute original ideas to the research project, plan and design research projects, write research proposals and co-author or author papers and manuscripts for publication. Incumbents typically supervise and coordinate a research staff.

Position Duties

  1. Actively engage in amending and troubleshooting protocols and laboratory procedures.
  2. Actively engage in designing, performing, evaluating, interpreting and presenting test results, develops conclusions and devises solutions to laboratory procedures and protocols.
  3. Ensures laboratory equipment and environment is maintained and cleaned to provide appropriate research space.
  4. Directs, monitors and participates in research activities including data collection, evaluation and analysis presentation
  5. May act independently in the planning and designing of research projects, establishing priorities, recommending schedules and budgets. Also the preparation of writing research proposals for funding.
  6. Creates, fabricates, operates, maintains, repairs and trains others in the operation of research equipment to further the collection of research data.
  7. Performs / Coordinates statistical analyses including complex statistical computations; prepares / generates statistical reports and independently interprets results.
  8. Assists the lab manager with administrative functions as assigned.
  9. Performs miscellaneous job related duties as requested.
