Position Summary

This position actively provides medication management oversight and completes associated tasks to support and promote safety and quality, proactively prevent diversion, and assure pharmacy department and organizational compliance with regulatory and accreditation standards. This position reports to the Pharmacy Compliance Manager for hiring, termination and annual evaluation.

Position Duties

  1. Actively provides medication management oversight and completes associated tasks to assure organizational compliance related to regulatory statutes and quality standards for designated state, federal and accrediting agencies: Arizona State Board of Pharmacy (BOP); Food and Drug Administration (FDA); Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA); Centers for Medicaid and Medicare Services (CMS); Det Norske Veritas (DNV), Accreditation Commission for Health Care (ACHC), Utilization Review Accreditation Commission (URAC), and other agencies as required.
  2. Responsible and accountable for developing, managing, maintaining, and executing policies and procedures that are required to assure departmental and organizational compliance with regulatory and accreditation survey requirements.
  3. Actively participates in organizational compliance, regulatory and survey readiness committees. Supports and reports up to designated compliance committees and leadership as required.
    • Proactively identifies risk areas and opportunities for improvement and develops corrective action plans as required to proactively prevent diversion and assure compliance with regulations and standards.
    • Provides education and elevates organizational awareness regarding regulatory standards.
    • Assists in developing and creating reports for key performance indicators for the Pharmacy Compliance Program. Supports the collection of data for regulatory filings, coordinates and develops reports and assessment tools to verify compliance.
    • Provides routine and standard reports and updates to the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee and the Office of Business Integrity (OBI) as required.
    • Provides ad hoc reports and updates to other pharmacy, quality and safety, nursing, and medical staff committees as required.
  4. Serves as a point of contact, resource, and interface for regulatory and accreditation agencies for on-site and remote surveys and assures continuous readiness.
  5. Proactively directs the activities, prepares, and provides reports related to medication control, compliance and diversion prevention activities and maintains required documentation for the organization.
    • Works collaboratively with the pharmacist-in-charge and pharmacy operations team to optimize automated dispensing cabinet settings and inventory to assure alignment with best practices.
    • Develops proactive diversion monitoring tools and reports and conducts follow up.
    • Supports and implements improvement activities organizationally for medication control and compliance.
  6. Actively works in conjunction with the Nursing, Quality, Risk, Office of Business Integrity (OBI), Legal, PCMG, Security, HR departments, Executive Leadership, Sr. Leadership, Medical Staff, and other ad hoc stakeholders responsible for medication compliance and business integrity to assure compliance with standards, statues, and regulations.
  7. Provides direct oversight and direction of duties for the Pharmacy Compliance Technician assigned to medication management and control and other pharmacy technical and professional staff as required.
  8. Assists with development, ongoing maintenance, and continuous improvement of a comprehensive, formal program for medication management compliance, diversion prevention, safety, and control.
    • Actively supports an ongoing surveillance program structure and process.
    • Develops and implements a proactive auditing program structure and plan to maintain compliance and prevent diversion.
    • Actively involved with direct and indirect medication management compliance oversight, investigation, and accountability.
    • Plans, develops, and provides education for organization staff related to regulations, diversion prevention and awareness related to medication control and compliance.
    • Implements Best Practice Strategies related to medication management and proactive medication diversion prevention.
  9. Ability to serve in the role of a staff pharmacist when needed for patient care and compliance.
  10. Performs miscellaneous job related duties as requested.
