Position Summary

Posting Note: Phoenix Children’s Hospital, Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition in partnership with the Division of Pediatric Surgery is seeking a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner with a minimum 3 years pediatrics experience and preferred gastroenterological/surgical experience to join our growing programs. The Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition and the Division of Pediatric Surgery at Phoenix Children’s are the largest pediatric programs in the state of Arizona for this specialized care. We offer comprehensive and compassionate evaluation, diagnostic, treatment and follow-up services for 500 patients with known or suspected Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD). Our services include medical evaluations, nutrition counseling, diagnostic laboratory testing, imaging, and both endoscopic and surgical procedures. This APP position will have responsibility for the care for our IBD patient population. The successful provider will have alternating responsibility for patient care in both the inpatient and outpatient settings. Inpatient duties include: rounding with both the GI and Surgical attending to address the daily care of IBD patients, daily EHR documentation, communication with other specialty consultants, ensuring adherence to IBD protocols, recruiting patients for research studies, and coordinating patient discharge and transition management. Outpatient duties would include evaluating IBD patients in the clinic setting for health maintenance and transition readiness, managing outpatient prescriptions and home care orders, educating patients and their families on active issues and therapeutic changes, interacting with appropriate consultants, and scheduling appropriate follow up. In addition, the APP will assist with education to the outpatient GI and Surgical RNs on IBD basics, treatment, and management and conduct outreach to local community and national groups. Creation of additional IBD protocols and participation in focused quality or research projects related to IBD, in conjunction with the GI and Surgical teams, is highly encouraged.

This position works in collaboration with the attending physicians and works within their scope of practice to provide excellent clinical care for patients. Plays a critical role in the patient family medical team. Professional who may practice in hospital’s inpatient and/or outpatient setting.

Position Duties

  1. Conducts comprehensive health history, physical assessments and plans for infants, children and young adults with acute and chronic health conditions. Utilizes advanced assessment skills to manage a cohort of patients.
  2. Orders and prescribes pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic interventions, and performs other therapeutic or corrective measures to treat illness and improve health status.
  3. Formulates family centered plan of care. Performs daily documents as necessary. Collaborated and coordinated care with other team members.
  4. Collects data and analyzes when necessary.
  5. Performs any needed advanced procedures that are associated with their credentialing process DOP.
  6. Utilizes the most up to date and evidence based practice for plan of care and able to alter the plan according to family needs and effectiveness or plan.
  7. Serves as an educational resource to patient/family/ nursing staff/ provider team and other health care teams as needed.
  8. Participates in own professional development by maintaining required competences, certifying body renewals, seeking educational offerings when available, and participates in the professional development of others which may include Advanced Practice Provider students, Residents and Medical Students. Acts as a preceptor/mentor for those new in department.
  9. Demonstrates commitment to patient safety by bring up concerns in appropriate manner, reporting through appropriate channels, and ensuring change of practice when necessary. Demonstrates shared accountability of safe practice.
  10. Performs miscellaneous job related duties as requested.
