Position Summary

This position is a physician support role for the Surgical Pathology area in the Pathology Department, and is responsible for quality, equipment, inventory and procedural oversight consistent with established standards, protocols, regulations and requirements. This position assists pathologists with the following: educational conferences; receiving, examining, processing, sectioning surgical pathology specimens; prosection of autopsies and tissue sampling for microscopic examination; reviewing clinical information patient medical records; gross/microscopic photography; radiography; computerized image processing; pulmonary barium angiograms; morphometric analysis. This position receives regular and periodic review of completed work activities from the Manager-Anatomic Pathology, Lead Certified Pathologist`s Assistant, and the Pathologists.

Position Duties

  1. Oversees technical aspects of the Surgical Pathology Laboratory to ensure achievement of established goals, objectives, and outcomes.
    • 1) Responsible for the maintenance and working condition of equipment and instruments within the area.
    • 2) Responsible for the review of the daily surgical schedule in evaluating, organizing and directing work flow needs throughout the day in the Surgical Pathology area.
    • 3) Oversees the adequate maintenance of inventory levels and orders supplies for the area.
    • 4) Works within the framework of an integrated health team by effectively communicating exchange of patient data, maintaining patient confidentiality as appropriate.
    • 5) Creates, maintains, revises pathology department procedures and protocols as necessary in conjunction with regulatory and departmental guidelines.
  2. Surgical Pathology specimen processing.
    • 1) Participates in patient testing and quality control testing of samples, plans techniques based on assessment of findings and accepted protocols.
    • 2) Triage patient specimens for testing in accordance with established quality standards,
    • methods, and practices as well as accepted hospital policies and procedures.
    • 3) Uses electronic laboratory information system to enter, log, and track all aspects of patient specimens and testing.
    • 4) Performs accurate gross examinations and descriptions of surgical tissue for pathology
    • (surgical and autopsy) in accordance with established policies, standards, and practices.
    • 5) Dictates clear and concise macroscopic descriptions for effective diagnosis and treatment.
    • 6) Processes specimens for special procedures including frozen sections within required time constraints.
    • 7) Proficient in techniques of gross specimen photography and radiography to facilitate accurate diagnosis of patient samples.
    • 8) Initiates and maintains confidential records of patient tests and results to provide for
    • ongoing and timely availability for diagnosis and accurate billing to patient record.
    • 9) Participates in tissue harvesting protocols to support tissue banking activities for the Biorepository.
  3. Autopsy performance and duties.
    • 1) Conducts post-mortem examinations in conjunction with the oversight of the case pathologist.
    • 2) Performs initial photography, radiography, gross examination and autopsy organ block evisceration.
    • 3) Documents and records organ weights, descriptions and anatomic/pathologic features.
    • 4) Samples organs and tissues for microscopic evaluation.
    • 5) Performs autopsy clean up, decontamination, and specimen storage.
    • 6) Organizes and prepares tissues, presentations, images for Autopsy gross conferences.
    • 7) Reviews clinical history with pathologists and/or attending physicians and extracts data from patient charts.
    • 8) Documents clinical history and preliminary findings from post-mortem examinations for the purposes of reporting.
  4. Participates in hospital and department operational and quality improvement initiatives.
    • 1) Performs, reviews, and maintains quality control testing, records, departmental procedures and files for the area to ensure ongoing compliance with policies, regulations and safety guidelines for safe work practices.
    • 2) Proactively evaluates systems, practices and assists to create and implement changes to increase and enhance the effectiveness of the operations.
    • 3) Uses electronic laboratory information system to enter, log, and track quality issues related to specimen/requisition errors, problems, or mishaps that require reporting.
  5. Maintains professional and technical competency in pathology through constantly pursuing knowledge and self-improvement.
    • 1) Maintains extensive knowledge in anatomic pathology, apprised of current developments and awareness of latest technology/practices to improve outcomes.
    • 2) Participates in continuing education opportunities provided through a number of avenues, including but not limited to: CAP and ASCP CE exercises, hospital and departmental CE opportunities, annual safety surveys, professional conferences.
  6. Organizational Education and Teaching.
    • 1) Involved in the preparation of slides and images for presentations.
    • 2) Performs necessary equipment set up for educational conferences.
    • 3) Instructs medical student and residents in technical aspects of Surgical Pathology specimen evaluation and post-mortem examination in the Autopsy area.
  7. Performs miscellaneous job related duties as requested.
