The Intraoperative Neuromonitoring (IONM) Specialist I is a mid-level position for intraoperative neuromonitoring (IONM). The IONM Specialist I performs IONM procedures appropriate to their competence, including test setup, electrode application, maintaining patient safety, and other related duties. Strong, well-developed communication skills, and teamwork are essential for this position. During IONM procedures for which competence has not been achieved, the IONM Specialist I trains under direct technical supervision. Once training is completed and all required institution competencies have been achieved, the IONM Specialist I works under indirect technical supervision.

1. Performs intraoperative procedures including somatosensory evoked potentials (SSEP), brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEP), Triggered and free run electromyography and cranial nerve monitoring, trans-cranial motor evoked potentials (TcMEP), electrocorticography and electroencephalography.
   • Reviews planned intraoperative procedure and orders for monitoring to determine the structures at risk relative to patient history/pre-existing conditions and monitoring requested.
   • Makes needed adjustments in monitoring by communicating with correct personnel including surgeon, nursing and the Neurophysiologist before and during monitoring case.
   • Recognizes and communicates significant events and changes during neuromonitoring to appropriate personnel; documents throughout the monitoring process all relative communications/responses, physiological status, anesthetic adjustments, and changes observed according to policy and procedure.
2. Performs Neurodiagnostic procedures including electroencephalography, evoked potentials, and long-term video EEG.
   • Provides a safe recording environment; including patient identification, proper infection control and safety measures throughout the procedure.
   • Performs patient assessment as related to care such as electrode fixation product allergies, movement restrictions, and cognitive function; knows and recognizes drug and physiological status effects on activity monitored.
   • Performs the Neurodiagnostic procedure according to the guidelines set forth by the American Clinical Neurophysiology Society (ACNS).
3. Maintains continuing education and competencies.
   • Acquires new competencies relative to industry standards in Electroneurodiagnostics.
   • Works to become a CNIM (certified neurointraoperative monitoring) Technologist.
   • Works towards additional registries within the Neurodiagnostic field.
4. Participates in tutoring, demonstrating, and mentoring other Neurodiagnostic staff members and EEG students.
   • Works with IONM trainees in all aspects of evoked potentials and general intraoperative monitoring during surgical procedures.
   • Works with EEG staff members and students, demonstrating and training all aspects of performing neurodiagnostic procedures including measurements, medical history, monitor placement, troubleshooting, instrumentation, stimulation techniques, averaging, sleep scoring, pattern recognition, and instruction in any additional areas as needed.
5. Performs miscellaneous job related duties as requested.
