Position Summary

This position is responsible for leading the Pharmacy Services clinical, educational and research strategies for Phoenix Children`s. As a leader within the department, this individual will be responsible for ensuring the practice of clinical pharmacy remains innovative and effective while meeting the needs of both our patients and colleagues. This role will work collaboratively with other clinical, education and research leaders of the organization to accomplish shared goals while ensuring proper resource allocation. The Director of Clinical Pharmacy, Education and Research will report directly to the Vice President Chief Pharmacy Officer.

Position Duties

  1. Plans, executes and supports the clinical pharmacy strategy of Phoenix Children`s Hospital throughout all sites of care.
    • a.Continuously assesses the role, value and visibility of clinical pharmacists while ensuring the department`s practice model supports optimal patient care outcomes.
    • b.Works within the pharmacy leadership team to ensure staffing models efficiently utilizes resources to provide maximum productivity and deliver high quality, patient-centered, pharmaceutical care. Monitors and coordinates adjustments to workflow patterns as needed.
    • c.Supports and advocates for the continued advancement of the role of clinical pharmacy throughout the organization.
    • d.Leads and supports clinical standardization initiatives across all sites of care
    • e.Develops and supports departmental data analysis to produce key performance metrics to promote ongoing financial, compliance, operational and clinical progress.
  2. Provides guidance and direction to pharmacy staff to assist them in their professional development.
    • a.Completes performance evaluations for direct reports while supporting staff members professional development plans and assures staff adherence to established departmental policies and procedures.
    • b.Monitors staff adherence to departmental, institutional, regulatory, and other applicable policies and procedures while initiating corrective action when appropriate.
    • c.Assists with the hiring, staffing, promotion, corrective action, and discharge of department employees.
  3. Serves on institutional and medical staff committees.
    • a.Serves as the Secretary of the PCH Pharmacy & Therapeutics Committee.
    • b.Ensures pharmacy representation on committees and work groups related to the development of clinical treatment protocol and pathways.
    • c.Participates in multi-disciplinary teams to develop patient-centered services, designs and implements corresponding programs, and measures their effectiveness within institutional goals related to cost, quality, and patient outcomes
  4. In collaboration with institutional research leaders, provides oversight and support of all pharmacy research activities.
  5. Supports the ongoing evaluation and maintenance of the Phoenix Children`s medication formulary to ensure it meets the clinical and financial needs of the organization.
  6. Promotes academic and scholarly activities throughout the department in order to continue to advance the practice and the profession.
    • a.Oversees the dissemination of drug information through in-service education of department personnel, hospital personnel, and consultation with patients, families, hospital staff and medical staff.
    • b.Contributes to the advancement of the profession through oral case presentations, publication, presentations at local, state, and national meetings and providing community education.
  7. Assures the establishment and maintenance of standards of practice, competency-based orientation, and continuing education programs for the department. Maintains and recommends enhancements to department policies and procedures governing all pharmacy activities and monitors implementation and compliance with hospital-wide policies.
  8. Maintains knowledge of current trends and developments in the practice of pediatric pharmacy by preserving state of the art technical skills by review of literature, professional journals, and participation in professional organizations.
  9. Ensures effective execution and maintenance of the ASHP accredited Pharmacy Residency Programs at PCH.
  10. Performs miscellaneous job related duties as requested.
