The Research Lab Manager participates in translational research by coordinating the day-to-day operations of a large lab research program. Duties are carried out under general direction of supervisors such as a principal investigator. This position develops, refines, and enforces activities related to lab operations. It advises lab members on meeting deadlines, performance and technical problems. This position ensures operations according to departmental, institutional and national guidelines with respect to safety, compliance, and technique. It provides oversight on laboratory operations related to supplies, equipment and facilities. Additional requirements involve direct, hands-on contribution to conducting experiments, including, but not limited to, wet bench work, chemical preparation, tissue analysis, microscopy and small animal handling. This position also participates in and is recognized for efforts towards study design, data analysis, presentation and publication.

1. Laboratory Personnel Oversight
   • Introduces and trains lab personnel on policy and procedures.
   • Monitors time cards and schedules (as appropriate).
   • Contributes to performance reviews of lab personnel.
2. Laboratory Compliance
   • Leads compliance activities related to internal and external guidelines, including safety, chemical and animal compliance.
   • Maintains IACUC and/or IRB records, submissions, and amendments.
   • Prepares reports as needed.
3. Technical Support
   • Ensures laboratory operations in terms of facilities, equipment maintenance, and instrument calibration. This includes physical and virtual resources.
   • Oversees compliance with laboratory protocols. Trains and provides intervention as needed.
   • Assists with ongoing experiments.
   • Refines policies, procedures and protocols as needed.
4. Laboratory Upkeep
   • Manages routine daily laboratory activities.
   • Coordinates ordering of research resources and supplies.
   • Coordinates laboratory process and flow to ensure throughput and efficiency.
   • Develops and implements assigned laboratory duties among personnel.
5. Data and written work
   • Advises on data collection, entry and presentation. Proofreads for errors.
   • Proofreads written work for style and content.
   • Participates in design of studies, data analysis, presentation and publication.
6. Participates in professional development programs to advance understanding and maintain current methodologies, practices, and philosophies as related to the research area.
7. Provides feedback during the process of changing, updating, or developing new policies and procedures.
8. Performs miscellaneous job related duties as requested.
