Position Summary

Posting Note: Phoenix Children’s Hospital is seeking a Pediatric and Perinatal Pathologist to join the professional staff of the Division of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine. The ideal candidate must have well-rounded experience in pediatric surgical pathology and autopsy pathology, with special interest in placental, fetal, and neonatal pathology. Additional expertise in cardiac pathology is desirable, but not required. The candidate must have motivation to build a Perinatal Pathology service, including developing strong working relationships with our growing Phoenix Children’s Neonatology division, Fetal Cardiology team, Fetal Diagnostic Imaging specialists, and our Fetal Care Network. The ideal candidate will cultivate partnerships with obstetric and maternofetal medicine groups in the community, including our neighboring adult hospitals in the Dignity Health system. Protected time for medicolegal consultation is also possible. The Pediatric and Perinatal Pathologist will become a member of the Phoenix Children’s Medical Group and will report to the Division Chief of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine. The candidate must be board-certified or board-eligible in Pediatric Pathology, and will join a growing team of 14 physicians and scientists, including 8 anatomic pathologists. Professionalism, leadership, interpersonal communication skills, and adaptability are essential. Active involvement in resident, fellow and medical student teaching through affiliated programs is expected. Academic appointments are strongly encouraged through our relationships with University of Arizona-Phoenix College of Medicine, Creighton University School of Medicine, and Mayo Clinic School of Medicine. The ideal candidate will be an accomplished Perinatal Pathologist with excellence in diagnostic skills, teaching ability, and a record of scholarship. Leadership opportunities in Anatomic Pathology or Biorepository are available for the right candidate. Phoenix Children’s Hospital main campus, located in the heart of Phoenix, is a full-service, freestanding, tertiary medical center with 433 licensed beds, 72 of which are dedicated to intensive care and 33 of which are NICU. We are a rapidly growing healthcare system, soon expanding to 610 licensed beds, making it one of the largest in the country. A second community hospital is opening in 2022, including a level III NICU, and third community hospital is expected in 2023. Our healthcare system includes: the state’s only Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Center, treating about 2,650 patients annually; a state-of-the-art motion analysis lab; a full-range of specialty services, including orthopedics, neurosciences, cardiovascular services, neonatology, and cancer and blood disorders; and a depth of high acuity specialties including heart, liver, kidney, bone marrow and stem cell transplantation, an active emergency department, and neonatal and pediatric intensive care units. Phoenix Children’s is a teaching hospital, leading the way for the next generation of pediatric providers through residency programs and fellowships, and is actively involved in clinical research, dedicating $10 million annually to support research activities. The staff physician shall provide patient care services and will support the PCH mission of providing hope, healing and the best health care for children and their families.

Position Duties

  1. Patient Care Services
    • 1)Provide patient care services for which he/she is clinically privileged, including but not limited to:
    • a)Provide direct patient care services on an inpatient and outpatient basis
    • b)Provide subspecialty consultations and follow-up.
    • c)Provide diagnostic and therapeutic services/procedures
    • d)Provide these services for urgent/ emergent care as necessary
    • 2)Strive to achieve the best patient and family centered care
    • 3)Support Hospital’s patient satisfaction goals as well as division’s specific targets
    • 4)Support and adhere to divisional patient safety and quality of care standards
    • 5)Practices Contemporary Evidence based medicine or latest experience based medicine
  2. Divisional Responsibilities
    • 1)Establish and demonstrate effort to achieve annual physician goals and objectives (e.g. individual, division, hospital)
    • 2)Support the medical education programs and activities of the Division, including but not limited to:
    • a)Provide direct supervision of trainees and allied health care professionals for the delivery of inpatient and outpatient services when applicable
    • b)Conduct teaching rounds, lectures and conference for trainees
    • c)Participate in the teaching and supervision of trainees and allied health care professionals assigned to the division
    • d)Participate in the postgraduate continuing educational activities of the division
    • 3)Support the research endeavors of the division including the research initiatives by other members of the division
    • 4)Support programmatic growth of division
    • 5)Support satellite efforts of division when appropriate

    • 1)Physician shall support the Division Chief in his/her role as liaison to the professional community and general public as requested by the Division Chief
    • 2)Physician may conduct teaching rounds or conferences outside of PCH, particularly if these activities support divisional clinical and teaching programs/ initiatives.
    • 3)Physician shall represent PCH in the medical and business communities and before the general public in a professional manner
    • 4)The following physical and mental skills are essential to the physician’s ability to successfully perform the foregoing duties and responsibilities:
    • a)The ability to communicate by telephone, computer or other communication devices
    • b)The ability to perform after hours or night call responsibilities as needed
    • c)The ability to work regularly scheduled work hours
