Position Summary

Performs a variety of tasks that are responsible for the preparation, distribution, inventory and management of Human Milk (HM) and Donor Milk (DM).

Position Duties

  1. Manages receiving and labeling of mothers HM according to procedure
    • Assures labeling of HM and DM are complete and up-to-date per policy
    • Organizes and performs inventory of HM supply for each patient in refrigerator and freezers
  2. Cleans work surfaces and equipment prior to HM preparation, and in between each individual patient milk preparation
    • Follows aseptic technique
    • Follows infection control policies
    • Maintains cleanliness of refrigerators and freezers on a daily and as needed basis
    • Maintains cleanliness of storage bins (in refrigerators and freezers)
  3. Prepares individualized HM feedings following established procedures
    • Performs identification of HM and DM containers per policy
    • Thaws, fortifies and labels bottles of HM and DM.
    • Assists registered nurse and/or registered dietitian by preparing formulas for patients with special dietary needs;
    • Prepares milk or formula in accordance with prescribed physician orders; includes additives if needed.
    • Communicates with appropriate nursing personnel for needed assistance with daily order changes and feeding order clarification
    • Uses bottle warmer or bead bath warmers per policy to thaw or warm milk
    • Delivers all prepared milk and formula to patient care areas.
    • Contacts appropriate nursing personnel to verify and/or clarify information
  4. Stores prepared feedings in patient care unit refrigerators, removing expired HM, DM or formula
    • Uses and practices proper storage times and temperatures for HM at all times
    • Rotates stored HM to use oldest HM first and to minimize undue wastage
    • Ensures expired milk is removed from inventory daily.
    • Removal of discharged patient bins
  5. Monitors daily inventory and orders additional nutrition room supplies as needed
    • Maintains inventory levels of unit milk and ready-to-feed formula
    • Stocks milk lab and nutrition room with all needed supplies
    • Places orders for stock in accordance with established inventory standards.
  6. Monitors refrigerator and freezer temperatures
    • Notifies facilities for assessment of potential/actual problems
  7. Participates in department inservices to maintain appropriate competence
  8. Maintains a working knowledge of technical terminologies and classifications as appropriate for the proper completion of job duties
