The Audiologist Extern is a doctoral-level student completing their required clinical fellowship year (or final clinical placement) under the direct supervision of licensed, credentialed audiologists. This role provides hands-on clinical experience across the full scope of audiology practice, including diagnostic hearing evaluations, hearing aid fittings and programming, vestibular assessments, and patient counseling. The Extern participates in case management, documentation, and treatment planning while developing clinical judgment and technical proficiency under close mentorship. This position collaborates with the broader audiology and healthcare team to support coordinated, patient-centered care. The Extern is expected to progressively assume greater clinical responsibility as competency develops, working toward readiness for independent practice.

• Provides Diagnostic Audiology Assessments
  
  1. Provides services and treatment in a safe manner. Report any safety concerns to the manager or director.
  2. Under the supervision of a licensed audiologist, selects appropriate diagnostic assessments, based on age of child, development level, reason for visit, medical history and department guidelines. Uses age appropriate communication style and language with patients. Obtains and interprets age specific audiometric data correctly using department norms.
  3. Under the supervision of a licensed audiologist, makes appropriate recommendations for amplification, therapy, referral, follow up testing, educational adaptations for patients with hearing loss and for those at risk for hearing loss.
  4. Under the supervision of a licensed audiologist, effectively interviews parents prior to formal evaluation and communicates results, recommendations, and financial resources to parents after evaluation in an effective manner. Involves family in care plans and educational activities.
  5. Under the supervision of a licensed audiologist, adjusts testing depending on patient developmental level, time allotted and location of evaluation.
• Treatment
  
  1. Under the supervision of a licensed audiologist, selects, fits and checks hearing aids, bone anchored devices and hearing devices based on department guidelines. Refers patients to the cochlear implant team as appropriate.
  2. Under the supervision of a licensed audiologist, uses Hearing Aid contracts consistently. Documents and charges within 24 hours. Submits correct codes to pre access for accurate insurance verification.
  3. Under the supervision of a licensed audiologist, makes appropriate referrals for continued audiology care.
  4. Under the supervision of a licensed audiologist, collaborates with other members of the internal Phoenix Children's and external care team.
  5. Under the supervision of a licensed audiologist, supports an exceptional patient experience in the delivery of treatment.
• Documentation
  
  1. Under the supervision of a licensed audiologist, completes documentation, and clear concise reports using quippe notes within 24 hours.
  2. Under the supervision of a licensed audiologist, includes appropriate professionals on cc of reports, following HIPAA guidelines.
  3. Under the supervision of a licensed audiologist, ensures safe handoffs via appropriate clinical information.
• Clinical Equipment
  
  1. Under the supervision of a licensed audiologist, troubleshoots equipment, informs supervisor of equipment issues, and works with supervisor to create plan for coverage until equipment is repaired.
  2. Under the supervision of a licensed audiologist, performs daily biologic checks of all clinical equipment.
• Professional Development
  
  1. Participates in huddles and staff meetings.
  2. Participates in the development of and updating of evidence-based protocols and guidelines.
  3. Completes assigned audiology projects
  4. Participates in process improvement activities
  5. Presents at least 2 case studies.
  6. Participates in community focused education events.
  7. Participates in continuing education events.
  8. Collaborates with other staff members and students.
