Position Summary

This position identifies and improves surgical performance improvement and patient safety practices by affecting care and processes at the bedside. The focus of this position is the Children’s Surgery Program and to conduct surgical case reviews, serve as a liaison to surgical division protected case reviews, and ensure that postoperative complications and system’s issues are addressed appropriately from a quality-improvement standpoint. Additionally, the Consultant collaborates with physician/clinician champions to use the data to identify opportunities for quality improvement and patient safety practices with their respective clinical specialties. The Coordinator supports and focuses the quality improvement efforts.

Position Duties

  • Assesses and improves surgical care using high reliability processes
    1. Assesses patient surgical care processes for safety/risk issues using expert understanding of Children’s Surgery Verification, NSQIP, and performance measures.
    2. Proficient at communication, able to connect with a variety of staff in a professional manner while influencing change and behavior.
    3. Sets goals for areas of responsibility and works with Program liaisons and the Children’s Surgery Program Manager to attain and sustain improvement.
    4. Maintains connection with the big picture while implementing at the micro level. Uses knowledge of the necessary structures, processes, and organizational landscapes/dynamics impacting successful implementation.
  • Expertise in NSQIP, Appendix 2, and Children’s Surgery Verification
    1. Utilizes current data sources and seeks new sources to understand complex problems.
    2. Conducts case reviews and reports to the Children’s Surgery Program Manager as needed.
    3. Creates trends from NSQIP and CSV data collection that reflects current practice.
    4. Integrates large volumes of NSQIP and CSV data and information into a succinct problem definition.
    5. Uses critical thinking, inductive, and deductive reasoning skills to reduce complex issues to realistic/feasible solutions and staging.
  • Leadership expertise with identification of priority areas and goal setting
    1. Recommends strategic priority areas for the organization based on data and trends.
    2. Works autonomously to identify areas of improvement, create action plans and successfully implement interventions to sustain improvement organization wide using appropriate stakeholders.
    3. Ability to train and educate others on a variety of reliability and performance improvement tools.
    4. Develops processes and infrastructure that is in full compliance with Children’s Surgery Verification.
    5. Expertise on surgical standards and requirements, able to apply knowledge to a variety of settings across the continuum.
  • Performs miscellaneous job related duties as requested.

Position Qualifications

1. Minimum of 3 years recent pediatric clinical experience.

2. One or more years of High Reliability/Performance Improvement experience or similar experience in a clinical setting.

3. One or more years of recent experience and expertise with regulatory standards (i.e. CMS, Joint Commission, etc.).

4. Facilitation experience with clinical teams, including physician participants.

5. 2 or more years of pediatric surgical experience.
