Position Summary

Posting Note: This role requires a Child Life Specialist Certification (CCLS)

The Patient Gaming & Technology Specialist will enhance the patient experience by researching, implementing, and training staff on innovative gaming and technology solutions. This role focuses on using technology to help patients cope with their diagnoses and treatment, promoting emotional well-being and engagement during their hospital stay.

Position Duties

  • Research, Procurement, and Implementation of Technologies
    • Investigate and evaluate new gaming and technology resources suitable for pediatric patients.
    • Collaborate with medical and therapeutic teams to identify patient needs and determine appropriate technologies to support them.
    • Implement new technologies, ensuring that they are user-friendly and accessible for both patients and staff.
  • Staff Training and Support
    • Develop and deliver training programs for hospital staff on the effective use of gaming and technology resources.
    • Create easy-to-follow instructional materials, including guides and videos, to assist staff in utilizing implemented technologies.
    • Provide ongoing support to staff, addressing any questions or challenges related to technology use.
  • Direct Patient Interaction and Support
    • Work directly with patients and their families to introduce and facilitate the use of gaming and technology as coping mechanisms.
    • Gather feedback from patients and their families on their experiences with the technologies and present recommendations to department leadership for improvements.
    • Collaborate with child life specialists and other healthcare providers to integrate technology into therapeutic play and distraction techniques.
  • Monitoring and Evaluation
    • Track the usage and effectiveness of implemented technologies, analyzing data to assess their impact on patient coping and emotional well-being.
    • Engages in activities to maintain awareness around emerging trends in gaming and technology in healthcare, continually seeking opportunities for innovation.
    • Report findings and recommendations to leadership to enhance the gaming and technology.
  • Collaboration and Professional Development
    • Partner with internal stakeholders including Child Life, Information Technology, Infection Prevention, Nursing, and others to ensuring programming is safe, compliant, and in alignment with organizational needs and expectations.
    • Partner with the Phoenix Children’s Foundation on fundraising events, donor engagement, and other activities related to program funding and engagement.
    • Partner with external organizations, game developers, and tech companies to access resources and expertise.
    • Participate in interdisciplinary team meetings to share insights and foster collaboration across departments.
  • Performs miscellaneous job related duties as requested.

1. Bachelor`s degree in Child Life, Therapeutic Recreation or related field.

Experience

1. Two (2) years of experience working with children of various age groups.

2. Experience in the gaming field, healthcare setting, or both.

3. 1 - 2 years of experience working in a hospital setting directly with patients and families.

Additional Requirements

1. BLS certification through the American Heart Association OR obtain within 30 days of hire.

2. Certified Child Life Specialist (CCLS) credential from the Child Life Certifying Commission (CLCC), OR obtain within 12 months of hire and maintained thereafter.

3. Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) credential, from the National Council Therapeutic Recreation Certification (NCTRC).
