Position Summary

Under the supervision of a pharmacist, the Lead Pharmacy Technician assists in guiding daily pharmacy technician operations and ensures that pharmacy technicians have the resources and training necessary to perform their jobs effectively. This position is responsible for staffing and providing direction to pharmacy technician staff to ensure completion of assigned tasks to support business operations. The Lead Pharmacy Technician observes all departmental policies, procedures and complies with the applicable professional standards, rules and statutes established by the Arizona Board of Pharmacy. This position receives supervision by Clinical Pharmacists and Lead Pharmacists and reports directly to the Outpatient Pharmacy Manager.

Position Duties

  1. Staffing
    • Routinely performs the duties and functions in the staffing role of a Pharmacy Technician for all position levels as needed to support pharmacy operations. Adjusts staffing assignments and directs daily technician workflow as needed to ensure completion of assigned tasks.
  2. Scheduling
    • Completes and posts technician schedules on time.
    • Assures that schedules are equitable and based on established staffing metrics.
    • Actively assists department leadership to resolve staffing variances due to unscheduled absences.
  3. Training
    • Actively participates in training for pharmacy technicians, students, and new employees. Assesses baseline skill level for new technicians and schedules appropriate training as required. Assists in the development and documentation of technician training as required to support operations and compliance with Arizona Board of Pharmacy regulations.
  4. Inventory Management
    • Monitors “Fill on Arrival” (FOA) and “Partial Fill” file daily to ensure that medication PAR levels are optimized and medication backorders are addressed to prevent delays in service or interruptions in continuity of patient care.
    • Assists with medication ordering and returns processing as needed.
  5. Hiring and Monitoring of Technician Staff Performance Metrics
    • Participates in the hiring process and provides input for performance evaluations for technical staff. Actively develops and monitors productivity metrics and efficiency of pharmacy technicians and provides input to department leadership.
  6. Quality Assurance, Financial Integrity, Compliance
    • Actively gathers and reports information on medication errors or adverse events in a timely manner.
    • Assures that daily cash drawer audits, reports and deposits are completed per department policy. Reports variances to Pharmacy Manager.
    • Assures that documentation and records required by the Board of Pharmacy, and State and Federal agencies are complete and readily accessible.
  7. Policies and Procedures
    • Actively participates in the development and implementation of policies and standard operating procedures that improve workflow efficiency and patient safety for pharmacy technician supported operations. Assists in advancing pharmacy best practice initiatives.
  8. Performs miscellaneous job related duties as requested.
