Position Summary

The Supervisor, SPD promotes and facilitates surgical instruments/equipment across all specialties under the direction of the Sterile Processing Manager. The Supervisor operations of Sterile Processing will also be responsible for enhancing a working relationship with the surgical staff , promoting a team-focused environment. The Supervisor promotes compliance with policies and procedures and compliance with regulatory agencies. Additionally, the Supervisor must be knowledgeable of decontamination, instrumentation, sterilization, and the building of case carts. The Supervisor is also responsible to ensure the processing of any sterilized product across the hospital. This position may fill in for the manager when the manager is absent.

Position Duties

  1. Assists with coordination of supervising and participating in SPD activities related to the establishing of and compliance with policies, standards and procedures for the decontamination, sterilization, assembly, storage and distribution of medical/surgical supplies and equipment to ensure compliance with patient care needs as well as regulatory standards
    • Supervises work activities of assigned staff to ensure achievement of established goals, objectives and outcomes; provides guidance, mentoring and direction as appropriate for ongoing staff development
    • Demonstrates effective leadership skills of delegation, organization, and coordination of activities related to functioning of assigned unit with 24-hour accountability as needed
  2. Assists with facilitating Instrumentation changes / requests
    • Coordinates equipment and instrument changes with sterile processing staff
    • Tracks who has oriented with specific equipment and instruments
  3. Act as secondary contact between Sub-Specialty coordinator and SPD
    • Orders and maintains basic operating room instruments
    • Monitors changes in case cart requisitions to ensure adequate inventory of supplies
  4. Demonstrates awareness of and assures compliance with Hospital and Department policies. Uses these as a basis for decision making
    • Recommends various personnel actions including, but not limited to hiring/firing, performance appraisals, completing transfers, and scheduling time off, working closely with Manager of SPD
    • Uses analytic skills to identify problems and solutions, and implements processes to resolve them with Manager of SPD
  5. Assists with maintaining liaison with representatives of local, regional and national sterile processing service providers as well as regulatory agencies to establish a resource for current trends and regulations within the service
  6. Utilizes appropriate interpersonal skills necessary to communicate effectively with medical personnel, vendors, physicians and subordinates when gathering and exchanging information
    • Maintains effective communication mechanisms in Sterile Processing with staff, Surgery, and between other departments.
  7. Performs miscellaneous job related duties as requested.
