Position Summary

The Supervisor of Lactation Services provides oversight of daily operations across the Lactation Department including staffing, standards for professional practice, patient safety, productivity standards, workflow efficiency, customer service, problem resolution and troubleshooting issues to ensure optimum efficiency for the department and compliance with all regulatory and licensing requirements. This position is responsible for assigned patients and provides clinical assessment, therapeutic interventions, care coordination, transition planning and emotional support to patients and families at PCH within their scope of practice. They ensure consistent provision of quality patient care while monitoring the adherence to all Lactation related policies, procedures and services. The Lactation Supervisor effectively communicates with staff, patients, and family members as well as physicians and other internal customers and stakeholders. This position ensures organizational and departmental goals, objectives, and standards are achieved while executing the strategic plans set by the organization.

Position Duties

  1. Direct supervision of daily operations for department
    • Coordinates the daily operational activities for the department, making sure hospital needs are being met.
    • Maintains schedules and coordinates coverage based on acuity.
    • Assures Kronos accuracy in collaboration with Nutrition Therapy Director.
    • Ensures timely and accurate completion of charting and provides chart audits.
    • Monitors implementation of approved productivity standards, protocols, policies, and guidelines and supports overall organizational values and mission.
    • Demonstrates strong, consistent clear communication and serves as a central point of information informing all team members.
    • Assists with monitoring and analyzing Lactation budget and developing action plans.
  2. Direct Supervision of Assigned Direct Reports
    • Provides supervision, mentoring, and direction as appropriate for ongoing staff development and retention.
    • Completes performance evaluations and initiates disciplinary process with support from Nutrition Therapy Directory.
    • Provides opportunities for cross training.
    • Participates in the hiring process by applying recruiting strategies to fill vacancies. Directly oversees the departmental orientation, ongoing development, and evaluation of assigned employees.
    • Develops education and training techniques to improve onboarding time and outcomes.
    • Works with management to develop effective employee education, productivity metrics, evaluations, and improvement plans.
    • Directly handles staffing schedules to flex with volume, identify and communicate staffing needs to management.
    • Builds on strengths and opportunities for each unit team, creating and supporting an environment that fosters teamwork, cooperation, respect, and diversity.
  3. Clinical responsibilities
    • Plans, implements, and evaluates individual patient goals, based upon assessment findings.
    • Actively participates in interdisciplinary rounds and evaluations as a member of the treatment team.
    • Documents patient assessments, interventions, and outcomes in the medical record.
    • Provides a safe, therapeutic, and healing environment for infants, children, adolescents, and families.
    • Represents and communicates family centered philosophy on departmental and hospital-wide committees.
  4. Assists department director in administrative duties
    • Compiles and maintains monthly productivity statistics for reporting.
    • Assists in developing and sustaining recognition and retention programs for the department
    • Leads/coordinates performance improvement efforts.
    • Maintains staff competency and coordinate the training necessary to keep technical staff current with the latest expectations.
    • Ensures licenses and certifications are current for all employees in the department.
  5. Provides excellent customer service
  6. Performs miscellaneous job related duties as requested.
