Position Summary

Responsible for the overall operations in the sterile processing department ensuring the budget, staffing, resources, regulatory and patient quality standards are met. Serve as a liaison for all PCH outside facilities that send instruments for reprocessing or have an on-site SPD function. Serves as the liaison for Perioperative Services to the Facilities and Biomedical Engineering departments, with accountability for maintenance and construction within the Sterile Processing and Perioperative physical department.

Position Duties

  1. Ensures staffing for the assigned area of responsibility
    • Plans staffing productivity targets, schedules, and daily work load to meet or exceed targets set by senior administration.
    • Plans and coordinates education, training, and ongoing competencies for all staff.
    • Holds regular staff meetings, follows up and implements plans to improve employee engagement.
    • Works with OR Manager, Lead RN`s and others to ensure effective team communication is occurring interdepartmental.
  2. Ensures Quality Patient Care
    • Maintains all required tests assuring sterility of all equipment and supplies that are processed through the department.
    • Ensures AAMI standards are adhered to at all times.
    • Keeps accurate and organized records to assure accountability.
    • Reports any violations/deviations to Infection Control and Perioperative Services Leadership to assure follow up.
    • Collaborates with other departments to assure that work processes are efficient.
    • Keeps all sets, instruments, and equipment in good working order and current.
    • Meets all regulatory standards for assigned area.
  3. Provides Services that are financially effective
    • Works closely with Materials Management on managing par levels, inventory, supplies, and equipment that is on contract.
    • Implements cost/time saving processes in the department.
    • Provides resources for center core, VAT team, and other departments as needed.
    • Meets or exceeds budgeted targets and completes variance analysis in a timely manner.
  4. Professional Role Model

    • Collaborates as a member of the Perioperative Leadership Team on Department specific goals.

  5. Coordinates with outside PCH unit and clinics to provide reprocessing services
    • Serves as an expert resource related to SPD processes, procedures, and regulatory requirements.
    • Aids in the orientation process for new SPD employees in outside PCH areas and clinics.
    • Develops processes to accurately track and return instruments sent to Main SPD for reprocessing.
    • Ensures that all regulatory standards are met in the transport and return of instruments from outside locations.
  6. Functions as a liaison and Perioperative project manager for repair and construction projects; interfacing with Facilities and Biomedical Engineering Departments
    • Serves as the department representative and coordinates all repair and remodeling projects.
    • Ensures all equipment has proper preventative maintenance completed and proper documentation.
    • Participates in all new Perioperative design projects.
  7. Maintains and supports the functionality of the Instrument Tracking System
    • Serves as the department representative for the SPD Instrument Tracking System.
    • Ensures all instruments and trays are entered correctly in the system and removed when taken out of services.
    • Performs audits to make sure the Instrument Tracking System is being utilized as designed.
  8. Performs miscellaneous job related duties as requested.
