Position Summary

This position will provide daily leadership for the newborn hearing screeners at all locations where PCH provides newborn hearing screenings.

Position Duties

  1. Provide Newborn Hearing Screening
    • Provides at least two days of screening per week at locations, as needed.
    • Evaluates and prioritize infants to be screened prior to discharge from the hospital based on time of birth, estimated discharge time, potential need for second screen and baby state.
    • Performs automated screening test based on screening protocol and documents results.
    • Follows established infection control procedures, utilizing appropriate baby handling skills such as calming a baby, using soothing infant touch and swaddling.
  2. Direct Supervision of Assigned Direct Reports
    • Maintains, schedules and coordinates coverage based on birth rates, testing parameters, and needs of hospitals.
    • Assures time tracking accuracy in collaboration with Audiology leadership.
    • Effectively manages staff performance feedback, discipline, training and coaching, with support of Audiology leadership.
  3. Training, Coaching, and Mentoring Staff
    • Participates in interviewing and recruiting staff.
    • Trains staff on newborn screening techniques, guidelines and policies of the hospitals.
    • Assesses staff newborn hearing screening service delivery.
    • Troubleshoots equipment issues and concerns and trains staff on the equipment and processes for obtaining replacement equipment and equipment repair.
  4. Outpatient Screening
    • Coordinates outpatient screening schedule with Audiology leadership and staff.
    • Obtains orders for outpatient screens, as needed, and sends to Audiology scheduling team via right fax.
    • Trains screeners on orders, scheduling process and use of right fax.
    • Performs outpatient screening as needed.
  5. Data Collection and Documentation
    • 1 Coordinates weekly Merge of data into HI Track at each location.
    • 2 Trains staff how to determine data to be included and how to Merge.
    • 3 Manages lists of screening refusals, transfers, and missed screenings.
    • 4 Monitors daily screening logs for trends in screening results.
  6. Collaborates with leadership to lead, create, and maintain an environment that advocates for staff and promotes individual and team engagement through clinical and administrative expertise and professional leadership.
    • Works collaboratively with screener on challenging cases identified by diagnosis or family situation.
    • Assists staff with developing skills including critical thinking and problem solving. Promotes staff engagement and advancement.
    • Promotes a culture of learning, resulting in staff development and retention.
    • Effectively communicates with nursing staff regarding discharge schedules, screening results, outpatient order information and other items to assure timely discharges.
  7. Achieve Audiology and Phoenix Children’s Hospital outcomes
    • Collaborates with Audiology leadership on creating and implementing process improvement projects that promote and align with the EHDI 1/3/6 guidelines.
    • Collaborates with Audiology leadership and screeners at other institutions to identify efficiencies and process improvements.
    • Manages and orders supplies in a fiscally responsible manner.
    • Serves as a daily operational resource to screeners in the management of supplies and equipment.
  8. Performs miscellaneous job related duties as requested.
