Position Summary

The Vice President, Surgery East provides strategic leadership and oversight for the daily operational responsibilities to Mercy Gilbert OR, Pre/Post-op, and Sterile Processing; dotted line responsibility for Thomas Surgery Center OR, Pre/Post-op, Sterile Processing, Infusion Center, East Valley OR, Pre/Post-op, and Sterile Processing. This position serves as a catalyst for creating a patient care environment that fosters patient advocacy, quality clinical competence and a professional work environment. In addition, this position is responsible for overseeing the achievement of goals related to patient experience, clinical outcomes, professional outcomes and indicators related to performance and performance improvement. This position aligns with the Department of Surgery and Anesthesia to meet patient care standards, and attends the Quarterly Board Meetings for Thomas Surgery Center and East Valley Surgery Center and will be a member of the Periop Standardization Committee.

Position Duties

  1. Assures an effective organizational structure and the development/implementation/evaluation of operating systems/programs results in clinically effective and efficient quality care; optimum service delivery; and achievement of identified tactics. Assures budget expectations and program needs are met through appropriate resource allocation to meet patient care/departmental demands.
  2. Collaborates with Nursing and Medical Staff Leadership on issues related to service delivery, technology and equipment, budget/capital planning, revenue generation and enhancement and all other related administrative matters.
  3. Develops and enhances operational systems to meet the needs of customers, manages resources efficiently and effectively, reduces non-value added activities and manages costs. Leads the design and implementation of care management systems that promote clinically effective quality care across a continuum. Promotes the development and implementation of best practices and the cultivation of a highly efficient patient flow process.
  4. Ensures programs and services comply with organizational policies, as well as federal/state/local agency requirements, regulatory standards and established professional standards. Establishes and maintains a positive level of involvement in the community so the organization and its values are promoted.
  5. Leads the shared governance system to facilitate shared decision-making and optimize contributions of staff members in evaluation and improving clinical systems.
  6. Prioritizes, proposes and oversees operational initiatives/system changes based on analysis of current processes and organizational goals. Develops, implements and evaluates initiatives to expand and maximize the effectiveness of the services based on performance-improvement targets
  7. Provides motivation, mentorship, direction and coaching of subordinates to ensure that leadership potential is achieved and job accountabilities are established and met. Serves as a professional role model to staff and future leaders establishing mechanisms that provide early identification and mentoring of staff leaders in succession planning. Ensures the performance management system, including the establishment of organizational-unit metrics/employee-engagement targets/Patient Satisfaction targets are in place and appropriate actions are taken in assigned departments to achieve targets.
  8. Serves as the Subject Matter Expert for patient services regarding trends, best practices and innovations in operationalizing clinical standards/national Professional Standards into daily operations. Facilitates the utilization of research results to ensure evidence-based nursing, healthcare, and management systems.
  9. Performs miscellaneous job related duties as requested.
