Position Summary

The Lead Pharmacy Technician is responsible for leading and supporting daily operations of pharmacy technicians within the Inpatient Pharmacy. This position supports the training and development of the pharmacy technician practice to ensure accurate and efficient preparation and delivery of medications in accordance with applicable laws, regulations, and policies. Under the direct supervision of licensed pharmacists, this role is able to perform all job duties of a pharmacy technician in addition to supporting training, scheduling, hiring, and the development of policies related to pharmacy technicians. The Lead Pharmacy Technician directly reports to an Inpatient Pharmacy Operations Supervisor.

Position Duties

  1. Routinely performs the duties and functions in the staffing role of a Pharmacy Technician at all position levels with proficiency and supports the department leadership to meet the department and hospital strategic goals.
  2. Effectively leads and implements assigned projects to completion and participates on committees and performance improvement teams as required.
  3. Participates in the hiring process and performance evaluations for technical staff. Actively develops and monitors productivity metrics and efficiency of technicians and provides feedback to department leadership.
  4. Actively assists the department leadership with the development of procedures, policies and guidelines for technician operations.
    • Actively participates in developing department operations standard operating procedures for technical functions
    • Implements policies and procedures for department and hospital
    • Involved with advancing Best Practice pharmacy initiatives as designated
  5. Develops and maintains technician work schedules to be fair, accurate and timely. Directs daily technician workflow to ensure completeness and accuracy of assigned tasks as approved by the department leadership.
    • Completes technician schedules on time and to meet department and hospital policies
    • Assures fair and balanced schedules are implemented based on staffing needs at all times
    • Directs daily technician workflow and assures that all tasks are complete during the shift
    • Reports operations deviations and problems to department leadership timely to assure compliant and safe patient care
    • Actively assists the Operations Lead Pharmacists and Managers to resolve daily unscheduled staffing variance needs (call outs etc)
  6. Collects, organizes, and evaluates data and information to assist the Pharmacists, Pharmacist Leads and/or Managers to proactively identify situations that have direct impact to patient care quality.
    • Actively gathers and reports information on medication errors or adverse events in a timely manner
    • Manages waste management and barcode tracking data to initiate improvements
    • Reviews and analyzes production data and reports to assure proper inventory and production management
  7. Monitors inventory of supplies required for the operation of the pharmacy and notifies staff, purchasing supply chain staff and department leadership of inventory supplies needed to be ordered. Verify that daily restocking/repackaging reports identifying medications required are at optimal levels.
  8. Maintains and demonstrate ability to operate and troubleshoot automated systems including Omnicell, TPN compounders and software and related pharmacy information systems (GE, SCM etc). Monitors quality and operations on the systems to support pharmacy operations and patient care.
  9. Actively participates in training technicians, students, and new employees. Assists the Pharmacists, Clinical Leads, Pharmacist Operation Leads, Managers and Chief of Pharmacy to properly educate and document technician training on pharmacy practices.
  10. Performs miscellaneous job related duties as requested.
