The Blood Bank Processing Technician performs a variety of blood component processing functions in the blood bank including the inspection, preparation and issue of blood products for transfusion. These duties are performed while maintaining the FDA required criteria of safety, purity, potency, integrity and quality of the product. This position receives supervision of completed work activities from the Blood Bank Supervisor, and does not supervise any other position.

1. Prepares blood components for transfusion, by following established protocols and current GMP, including:
   • Thawing frozen products
   • Aliquoting products in pediatric bags and syringes
   • Irradiation of cellular products
   • Pooling plasma and cryoprecipitate
   • Proper component preparation in LIS and labeling components with ICCBBA standards
2. Issues prepared blood products by ensuring the safety, purity, potency, integrity and quality of the product before releasing to patient care areas, including checking:
   • All clerical data
   • Special requirements
   • Positive Patient identification
3. Assists with blood product inventory management by:
   • Assessing inventory levels
   • Performing visual inspection of blood components.
   • Electronic tracking of inventory to help ensure effective use of resources
4. Assesses specimen quality and integrity for patient age, appropriate type, volume, and positive patient identification. Electronically receives specimens accurately in LIS.
   • Electronically receives specimens accurately in LIS according to positive patient identification procedures.
5. Maintains, cleans, and sanitizes Blood Bank equipment and instruments in accordance with established standards and policy.
6. Performs miscellaneous job related duties as requested.
