Position Summary

In alignment with American Kidney Foundation (AKF) standards and guidelines for this job description, the Hemodialysis Technician maintains smooth and efficient flow of patients in the dialysis clinic, performs functions delegated by nursing and physician staff, and maintains and promotes a safe, clean organized environment for the safe delivery of care while maintaining professional conduct, good communication skills, and confidentiality. This position also participates in the multidisciplinary process.

Position Duties

  1. Assembles necessary supplies
  2. Assembles and prepares the dialysis extra corporeal circuit according to protocol and patient specific dialysis prescription.
  3. Tests monitors and machine functions, including alarms, conductivity and temperature. Sets monitors and alarms according to unit and manufacturer protocols.
  4. Obtains and documents pre-dialysis vital signs, weight, and temperature.
  5. Inspects a patients dialysis access. Administers local anesthesia, inserts needles, and initiates dialysis according to unit protocol and patient prescription.
  6. Documents treatment parameters and communicates patient condition and issues to Registered Nurse.
  7. Administers anticoagulant according to unit protocols and prescription.
  8. Measures and adjusts blood flow rates according to established protocols and prescription.
  9. Calculates and adjusts fluid removal rates according to established protocols and prescription.
  10. Monitors patients and equipment, responds to alarms, and readjusts treatment parameters as defined by established protocols and individual patient requirements.
  11. Changes fluid removal rate and patient position, and administers replacement saline as directed by the registered nurse, physician order, or unit protocol.
  12. Recognizes and responds appropriately to dialysis-related emergencies such as hypotensive episodes, needle displacement or infiltration, clotting episodes, blood leaks, air emboli, etc. Follow facility protocol for any code situation.
  13. Discontinues dialysis and establishes hemostasis following unit protocol. Inspects, cleans, and dresses access according to unit protocol.
  14. Obtains and records post-dialysis vital signs, temperature, and weight.
  15. Discards dialysis supplies and sanitizes equipment according to manufacturer and unit protocol.
  16. Communicates emotional, medical, psychosocial, and nutritional concerns to the registered nurse.
  17. Collaborates with the registered nurse in identifying and meeting patient education goals.
  18. Performs miscellaneous job related duties as requested.
