Position Summary

This position provides American Sign Language (ASL) interpreting services for deaf and hard of hearing patients and families in a wide variety of hospital and outpatient clinical settings and English interpretation of ASL for medical providers, and other hospital/clinic support staff.

Position Duties

  1. Concurrently performs English to ASL and ASL to English interpretation of patient care needs between patient, family and health care team members to ensure understanding of needs, issues, and/or concerns.
  2. Provides accurate and timely documentation of interpretation activities in the medical record.
  3. Enters encounters into Language Services data base.
  4. Provides recommendations to health care team on how best to improve communication needs of patient and/or family.
    • Assists with providing for the deaf and hard of hearing patient/family communication needs, including assessing and adjusting lighting, seating arrangements and access to visual aides or recommending additional communication resources like a certified deaf interpreter (CDI).
  5. Performs miscellaneous job related duties as requested.

1. American Sign Language experience in a hospital setting. Required
2. American Sign Language experience with interpreting for children. Required

Certifications/Licenses/Registries
1. Current professional certification from the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID certified) that includes a written general knowledge test, as well as a practical interpreting skills exam. Required
2. Current license from The Arizona Commission for the Deaf and the Hard of Hearing Required

Special Skills
1. Fully fluent in American Sign Language to English and English to American Sign Language. Required
2. Computer skills for data entry and research. Required
3. Must possess strong concentration, speaking and listening skills. Required
4. Fluency in spoken Spanish. Preferred
